Russia’s Trade with Australia

In 2012, Russia’s trade with Australia was $1,005,970,801, down 6.77% ($73,031,020) from 2011.

Russia’s exports to Australia in 2012 totaled $106,717,014, up 62.67% ($41,115,521) from 2011.

Russia’s imports from Australia in 2012 were $899,253,787, down 11.26% ($114,146,541) from 2011.

Russia’s trade deficit with Australia in 2012 was $792,536,773, a 16.38% decrease ($155,262,062) over 2011.

Australia was Russia’s 67th largest trading partner in 2012 (down from 66th in 2011), accounting for 0.1195% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.1312% in 2011).

Australia was Russia’s 99th largest export market in 2012 (up from 107th in 2011), accounting for 0.0203% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0127% in 2011).

Australia was Russia’s 44th largest supplier in 2012 (down from 42nd in 2011), accounting for 0.2834% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.3314% in 2011).

The major share of Russian exports to Australia in 2012 (and in 2011) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 63.66% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (61.74% in 2011);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 11.73% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (0.00% in 2011);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 10.31% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (13.30% in 2011);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 5.45% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (3.02% in 2011);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 5.21% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (12.71% in 2011);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 2.28% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (7.01% in 2011).

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $12,512,815;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - an increase of $3,936,316;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $3,232,404;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $3,117,503;
  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - an increase of $1,081,861;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - an increase of $607,607.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Australia in 2012 over 2011 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Beverages, spirits and vinegar (HS code 22) - a decrease of $2,130,884;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - a decrease of $1,097,163;
  • Tools, implements, cutlery, spoons and forks, of base metal; parts thereof of base metal (HS code 82) - a decrease of $792,709;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $753,348;
  • Essential oils and resinoids; perfumery, cosmetic or toilet preparations (HS code 33) - a decrease of $682,529;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $670,910;

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 35.95% of Russia’s total imports from Australia (42.01% in 2011);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 11.32% of Russia’s total imports from Australia (9.33% in 2011);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 2.62% of Russia’s total imports from Australia (0.43% in 2011).
