Russia’s Trade with Japan

In 2012, Russia’s trade with Japan totaled $31,158,265,329, up 5.05% ($1,497,717,843) from 2011.

Russia’s exports to Japan in 2012 totaled $15,508,817,703, up 5.91% ($865,355,062) from 2011.

Russia’s imports from Japan in 2012 totaled $15,649,447,626, up 4.21% ($632,362,781) from 2011.

Russia’s trade deficit with Japan in 2012 was $140,629,923, a 62.36% decrease ($232,992,281) over 2011.

Japan was Russia’s 8th largest trading partner in 2012 (up from 9th in 2011), accounting for 3.7005% of Russia’s total trade (up from 3.6062% in 2011).

Japan was Russia’s 10th largest export market in 2012 (up from 11th in 2011), accounting for 2.9556% of Russia’s total exports (up from 2.8339% in 2011).

Japan was Russia’s 4th largest supplier in 2012 (just as in 2011), accounting for 4.9326% of Russia’s total imports (up from 4.9114% in 2011).

Russia’s Exports to Japan

The major share of Russian exports to Japan in 2012 (and in 2011) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 82.33% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (81.39% in 2011);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 8.34% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (8.22% in 2011);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 2.82% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (3.64% in 2011);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 2.63% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (2.80% in 2011);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 1.72% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (1.51% in 2011);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 1.55% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (1.77% in 2011).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Japan in 2012 over 2011 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $835,322,442;
  • Fish and crustaceans, molluscs and other aquatic invertebrates (HS code 03) - an increase of $56,834,055;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - an increase of $46,964,834.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Japan in 2012 over 2011 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $96,385,843.

Russia’s Imports from Japan

The major share of Russian imports from Japan in 2012 (and in 2011) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 85.71% of Russia’s total imports from Japan (84.31% in 2011);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 7.22% of Russia’s total imports from Japan (6.66% in 2011);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 4.17% of Russia’s total imports from Japan (6.33% in 2011).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Japan in 2012 over 2011 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - an increase of $641,563,875;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - an increase of $208,045,613;

  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - a decrease of $116,048,709;
