Russia’s Trade with South Ossetia

In 2012, Russia’s trade with South Ossetia was $55,634,075, down 14.96% ($9,787,645) from 2011.

Russia’s exports to South Ossetia in 2012 were $54,542,885, down 14.65% ($9,358,461) from 2011.

Russia’s imports from South Ossetia in 2012 were $1,091,190, down 28.23% ($429,184) from 2011.

Russia’s trade surplus with South Ossetia in 2012 was $53,451,695, a 14.31% decrease ($8,929,277) over 2011.

South Ossetia was Russia’s 128th largest trading partner in 2012 (up from 129th in 2011), accounting for 0.0066% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.0080% in 2011).

South Ossetia was Russia’s 111th largest export market in 2012 (down from 108th in 2011), accounting for 0.0104% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.0124% in 2011).

South Ossetia was Russia’s 147th largest supplier in 2012 (down from 141st in 2011), accounting for 0.0003% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.0005% in 2011).

Russia’s Exports to South Ossetia

The major share of Russian exports to South Ossetia in 2012 (and in 2011) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 29.72% of Russia’s total exports to South Ossetia (36.85% in 2011);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 28.50% of Russia’s total exports to South Ossetia (17.99% in 2011);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 13.20% of Russia’s total exports to South Ossetia (20.80% in 2011);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 11.31% of Russia’s total exports to South Ossetia (12.23% in 2011);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 10.93% of Russia’s total exports to South Ossetia (7.98% in 2011).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to South Ossetia in 2012 over 2011 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $719,779;
  • Products of the milling industry; malt; starches; inulin; wheat gluten (HS code 11) - an increase of $341,871.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to South Ossetia in 2012 over 2011 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $3,266,504;
  • Beverages, spirits and vinegar (HS code 22) - a decrease of $2,901,941;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - a decrease of $2,334,355;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - a decrease of $1,490,383;
  • Live animals (HS code 01) - a decrease of $1,197,815;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - a decrease of $702,891;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - a decrease of $639,083;
  • Live trees and other plants; bulbs, roots and the like; cut flowers and ornamental foliage (HS code 06) - a decrease of $555,397;
  • Tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes (HS code 24) - a decrease of $542,709;

  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $210,786;
  • Musical instruments; parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 92) - a decrease of $203,375;

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 41.05% of Russia’s total imports from South Ossetia (62.43% in 2011);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 3.75% of Russia’s total imports from South Ossetia (0.37% in 2011).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from South Ossetia in 2012 over 2011 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $82,030;
  • Edible fruit and nuts; peel of citrus fruit or melons (HS code 08) - an increase of $40,936;
