Russia’s Trade with Syria

In 2012, Russia’s trade with Syria was $656,261,280, down 67.04% ($1,334,802,939) from 2011.

Russia’s exports to Syria in 2012 were $625,527,140, down 67.79% ($1,316,673,023) from 2011.

Russia’s imports from Syria in 2012 were $30,734,140, down 37.10% ($18,129,916) from 2011.

Russia’s trade surplus with Syria in 2012 was $594,793,000, a 68.58% decrease ($1,298,543,107) over 2011.

Syria was Russia’s 75th largest trading partner in 2012 (down from 47th in 2011), accounting for 0.0779% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.2421% in 2011).

Syria was Russia’s 62nd largest export market in 2012 (down from 38th in 2011), accounting for 0.1192% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.3759% in 2011).

Syria was Russia’s 103rd largest supplier in 2012 (down from 98th in 2011), accounting for 0.0097% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.0160% in 2011).

Russia’s Exports to Syria

The major share of Russian exports to Syria in 2012 (and in 2011) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 15.57% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (9.50% in 2011);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 11.12% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (3.15% in 2011);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 8.68% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (3.08% in 2011);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 1.07% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (0.70% in 2011);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 0.94% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (2.38% in 2011);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 0.01% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (44.48% in 2011).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Syria in 2012 over 2011 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - an increase of $5,768,974;
  • Tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes (HS code 24) - an increase of $4,251,978;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - an increase of $3,133,488;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - an increase of $2,480,527.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Syria in 2012 over 2011 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $863,753,017;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $67,517,025;
