Russia’s Trade with Afghanistan

In 2013, Russia’s trade with Afghanistan was $645,253,757, down 32.08% ($304,721,788) from 2012.

Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in 2013 were $630,974,180, down 32.78% ($307,697,186) from 2012.

Russia’s imports from Afghanistan in 2013 totaled $14,279,577, up 26.32% ($2,975,398) from 2012.

Russia’s trade surplus with Afghanistan in 2013 was $616,694,603, a 33.50% decrease ($310,672,584) over 2012.

Afghanistan was Russia’s 79th largest trading partner in 2013 (down from 69th in 2012), accounting for 0.0766% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.1128% in 2012).

Afghanistan was Russia’s 66th largest export market in 2013 (down from 56th in 2012), accounting for 0.1197% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.1789% in 2012).

Afghanistan was Russia’s 116th largest supplier in 2013 (down from 115th in 2012), accounting for 0.0045% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.0036% in 2012).

Russia’s Exports to Afghanistan

The major share of Russian exports to Afghanistan in 2013 (and in 2012) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 48.49% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (61.82% in 2012);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 8.85% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (6.80% in 2012);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 3.13% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (1.90% in 2012);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 2.64% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (2.76% in 2012);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 1.77% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (3.48% in 2012);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 1.02% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (0.88% in 2012).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in 2013 over 2012 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - an increase of $2,756,263.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in 2013 over 2012 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $274,270,437;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $21,263,640;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $7,843,277;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $6,809,709;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - a decrease of $2,069,717.

Russia’s Imports from Afghanistan

The major share of Russian imports from Afghanistan in 2013 (and in 2012) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 96.60% of Russia’s total imports from Afghanistan (97.90% in 2012);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 0.39% of Russia’s total imports from Afghanistan (1.45% in 2012).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Afghanistan in 2013 over 2012 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers (HS code 07) - an increase of $2,011,235;
  • Edible fruit and nuts; peel of citrus fruit or melons (HS code 08) - an increase of $863,741.

The largest declines in Russia’s imports from Afghanistan in 2013 over 2012 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - a decrease of $147,626;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $122,323.
