Russia’s Trade with Iran

In 2013, Russia’s trade with Iran was $1,601,537,085, down 31.22% ($726,974,437) from 2012.

Russia’s exports to Iran in 2013 were $1,168,616,105, down 38.51% ($731,770,505) from 2012.

Russia’s imports from Iran in 2013 totaled $432,920,980, up 1.12% ($4,796,068) from 2012.

Russia’s trade surplus with Iran in 2013 was $735,695,125, a 50.03% decrease ($736,566,573) over 2012.

Iran was Russia’s 59th largest trading partner in 2013 (down from 45th in 2012), accounting for 0.1902% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.2765% in 2012).

Iran was Russia’s 55th largest export market in 2013 (down from 38th in 2012), accounting for 0.2216% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.3622% in 2012).

Iran was Russia’s 60th largest supplier in 2013 (down from 57th in 2012), accounting for 0.1374% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.1349% in 2012).

Russia’s Exports to Iran

The major share of Russian exports to Iran in 2013 (and in 2012) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 31.92% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (46.09% in 2012);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 30.88% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (28.20% in 2012);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 18.37% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (13.25% in 2012);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 10.99% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (6.15% in 2012);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 5.08% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (4.28% in 2012);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 2.29% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (1.54% in 2012).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Iran in 2013 over 2012 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes (HS code 24) - an increase of $9,972,344;
  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - an increase of $9,079,254;
  • Pulp of wood or of other fibrous cellulosic material; waste and scrap of paper or paperboard (HS code 47) - an increase of $6,800,946;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - an increase of $6,360,598;
  • Ships, boats and floating structures (HS code 89) - an increase of $4,520,877;
  • Printed books, newspapers, pictures and other products of the printing industry; manuscripts, typescripts and plans (HS code 49) - an increase of $3,814,599;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - an increase of $3,691,687.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Iran in 2013 over 2012 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $499,242,991;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - a decrease of $180,369,666;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $41,917,358;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $21,859,080;
  • Residues and waste from the food industries; prepared animal feed (HS code 23) - a decrease of $11,407,635;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $10,373,942;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - a decrease of $5,981,423;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - a decrease of $5,813,478.

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 11.80% of Russia’s total imports from Iran (9.02% in 2012);

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 1.68% of Russia’s total imports from Iran (4.08% in 2012);
