Russia’s Trade with Japan

In 2013, Russia’s trade with Japan totaled $33,228,007,597, up 6.64% ($2,069,742,268) from 2012.

Russia’s exports to Japan in 2013 totaled $19,667,507,637, up 26.82% ($4,158,689,934) from 2012.

Russia’s imports from Japan in 2013 were $13,560,499,960, down 13.35% ($2,088,947,666) from 2012.

Russia’s trade balance with Japan went from a deficit of $140,629,923 in 2012, to a surplus of $6,107,007,677 in 2013.

Japan was Russia’s 7th largest trading partner in 2013 (up from 8th in 2012), accounting for 3.9452% of Russia’s total trade (up from 3.7005% in 2012).

Japan was Russia’s 8th largest export market in 2013 (up from 10th in 2012), accounting for 3.7301% of Russia’s total exports (up from 2.9556% in 2012).

Japan was Russia’s 7th largest supplier in 2013 (down from 4th in 2012), accounting for 4.3054% of Russia’s total imports (down from 4.9326% in 2012).

Russia’s Exports to Japan

The major share of Russian exports to Japan in 2013 (and in 2012) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 87.13% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (82.33% in 2012);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 4.78% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (8.34% in 2012);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 2.85% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (2.63% in 2012);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 2.56% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (2.82% in 2012);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 1.27% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (1.55% in 2012);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 1.12% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (1.72% in 2012).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Japan in 2013 over 2012 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $4,282,233,819;
  • Natural or cultured pearls, precious or semi-precious stones,precious metals, metals clad with precious metal and articles thereof; imitation jewelry; coin (HS code 71) - an increase of $153,164,811;
  • Ores, slag and ash (HS code 26) - an increase of $84,866,945;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $70,951,541.

The major share of Russian imports from Japan in 2013 (and in 2012) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 83.23% of Russia’s total imports from Japan (85.71% in 2012);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 8.38% of Russia’s total imports from Japan (7.22% in 2012);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 4.69% of Russia’s total imports from Japan (4.17% in 2012).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Japan in 2013 over 2012 were recorded for the following product groups:
