Russia’s Trade with Afghanistan

In 2014, Russia’s trade with Afghanistan totaled $965,802,008, up 49.68% ($320,548,251) from 2013.

Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in 2014 totaled $952,904,919, up 51.02% ($321,930,739) from 2013.

Russia’s imports from Afghanistan in 2014 were $12,897,089, down 9.68% ($1,382,488) from 2013.

Russia’s trade surplus with Afghanistan in 2014 was $940,007,830, a 52.43% increase ($323,313,227) over 2013.

Afghanistan was Russia’s 68th largest trading partner in 2014 (up from 79th in 2013), accounting for 0.1234% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0766% in 2013).

Afghanistan was Russia’s 56th largest export market in 2014 (up from 66th in 2013), accounting for 0.1918% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.1197% in 2013).

Afghanistan was Russia’s 117th largest supplier in 2014 (down from 116th in 2013), accounting for 0.0045% of Russia’s total imports (just as in 2013).

Russia’s Exports to Afghanistan

The major share of Russian exports to Afghanistan in 2014 (and in 2013) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 24.46% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (48.49% in 2013);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 8.12% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (1.77% in 2013);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 4.22% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (8.85% in 2013);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 3.14% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (3.13% in 2013);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 2.03% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (2.64% in 2013);

  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - an increase of $10,138,548;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $5,029,911.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in 2014 over 2013 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $72,874,419;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $15,636,795.

Russia’s Imports from Afghanistan

The major share of Russian imports from Afghanistan in 2014 (and in 2013) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 87.26% of Russia’s total imports from Afghanistan (96.60% in 2013);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 8.92% of Russia’s total imports from Afghanistan (0.39% in 2013).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Afghanistan in 2014 over 2013 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $884,718;
  • Furskins and artificial fur; manufactures thereof (HS code 43) - an increase of $166,668;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $118,615;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - an increase of $92,971;
  • Raw hides and skins (other than furskins) and leather (HS code 41) - an increase of $59,758.

The largest declines in Russia’s imports from Afghanistan in 2014 over 2013 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers (HS code 07) - a decrease of $1,944,791;
  • Edible fruit and nuts; peel of citrus fruit or melons (HS code 08) - a decrease of $538,691;
  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - a decrease of $56,850.
