Russia's Trade with South Africa

In the 1st quarter of 2016, Russia's trade with South Africa was $112,752,194, down 26.81% ($41,297,938) from the 1st quarter of 2015.

Russia's exports to South Africa in the 1st quarter of 2016 totaled $31,880,702, up 6.59% ($1,970,523) from the 1st quarter of 2015.

Russia's imports from South Africa in the 1st quarter of 2016 were $80,871,492, down 34.85% ($43,268,461) from the 1st quarter of 2015.

Russia's trade deficit with South Africa in the 1st quarter of 2016 was $48,990,790, a 48.01% decrease ($45,238,984) over the 1st quarter of 2015.

South Africa was Russia's 72nd largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2016 (down from 71st in the 1st quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.1159% of Russia's total trade (down from 0.1164% in the 1st quarter of 2015).

South Africa was Russia's 90th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2016 (up from 92nd in the 1st quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.0520% of Russia's total exports (up from 0.0331% in the 1st quarter of 2015).

South Africa was Russia's 55th largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2016 (down from 47th in the 1st quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.2250% of Russia's total imports (down from 0.2953% in the 1st quarter of 2015).

Russia's Exports to South Africa

The major share of Russian exports to South Africa in the 1st quarter of 2016 (and in the 1st quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 38.52% of Russia's total exports to South Africa (44.81% in the 1st quarter of 2015);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 25.19% of Russia's total exports to South Africa (14.92% in the 1st quarter of 2015);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 14.81% of Russia's total exports to South Africa (9.14% in the 1st quarter of 2015);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 10.09% of Russia's total exports to South Africa (14.29% in the 1st quarter of 2015);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 4.93% of Russia's total exports to South Africa (4.17% in the 1st quarter of 2015);

  • Wadding, felt and nonwovens; special yarns, twine, cordage, ropes and cables and articles thereof (HS code 56) - an increase of $463,610;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - an increase of $433,982;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - an increase of $379,950;
  • Ores, slag and ash (HS code 26) - an increase of $300,043;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - an increase of $244,913;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - an increase of $197,089.

The largest declines in Russia's exports to South Africa in the 1st quarter of 2016 over the 1st quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Pulp of wood or of other fibrous cellulosic material; waste and scrap of paper or paperboard (HS code 47) - a decrease of $1,603,826;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - a decrease of $1,579,392;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $1,359,013;
  • Miscellaneous chemical products (HS code 38) - a decrease of $734,989;
  • Miscellaneous manufactured articles (HS code 96) - a decrease of $675,037;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $666,540;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - a decrease of $129,394;
  • Tools, implements, cutlery, spoons and forks, of base metal; parts thereof of base metal (HS code 82) - a decrease of $107,175.

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 30.38% of Russia's total imports from South Africa (24.80% in the 1st quarter of 2015);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 16.54% of Russia's total imports from South Africa (8.26% in the 1st quarter of 2015);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 11.18% of Russia's total imports from South Africa (26.67% in the 1st quarter of 2015);
