Russia's Trade with Afghanistan

In the 1st quarter of 2016, Russia's trade with Afghanistan was $36,260,678, down 23.38% ($11,064,417) from the 1st quarter of 2015.

Russia's exports to Afghanistan in the 1st quarter of 2016 were $34,085,211, down 24.40% ($11,000,893) from the 1st quarter of 2015.

Russia's imports from Afghanistan in the 1st quarter of 2016 were $2,175,467, down 2.84% ($63,524) from the 1st quarter of 2015.

Russia's trade surplus with Afghanistan in the 1st quarter of 2016 was $31,909,744, a 25.53% decrease ($10,937,369) over the 1st quarter of 2015.

Afghanistan was Russia's 102nd largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2016 (down from 93rd in the 1st quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.0373% of Russia's total trade (up from 0.0358% in the 1st quarter of 2015).

Afghanistan was Russia's 87th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2016 (down from 80th in the 1st quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.0555% of Russia's total exports (up from 0.0499% in the 1st quarter of 2015).

Afghanistan was Russia's 115th largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2016 (down from 109th in the 1st quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.0061% of Russia's total imports (up from 0.0053% in the 1st quarter of 2015).

Russia's Exports to Afghanistan

The major share of Russian exports to Afghanistan in the 1st quarter of 2016 (and in the 1st quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 48.30% of Russia's total exports to Afghanistan (11.03% in the 1st quarter of 2015);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 26.12% of Russia's total exports to Afghanistan (15.13% in the 1st quarter of 2015);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 15.41% of Russia's total exports to Afghanistan (24.63% in the 1st quarter of 2015);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 5.70% of Russia's total exports to Afghanistan (43.84% in the 1st quarter of 2015);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 2.46% of Russia's total exports to Afghanistan (2.39% in the 1st quarter of 2015);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 1.46% of Russia's total exports to Afghanistan (1.98% in the 1st quarter of 2015).

The largest gains in Russia's exports to Afghanistan in the 1st quarter of 2016 over the 1st quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $11,488,817;
  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - an increase of $2,104,089.

The largest declines in Russia's exports to Afghanistan in the 1st quarter of 2016 over the 1st quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $17,772,006;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $5,864,547;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $241,469;
  • Soap, organic surface-active agents, washing preparations, lubricating preparations, artificial waxes, prepared waxes, polishing or scouring preparations, candles and similar articles, modeling pastes, "dental waxes" and dental preparations with a basis of plaster (HS code 34) - a decrease of $239,194.

Russia's Imports from Afghanistan

The major share of Russian imports from Afghanistan in the 1st quarter of 2016 (and in the 1st quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 98.95% of Russia's total imports from Afghanistan (100.00% in the 1st quarter of 2015).

The largest gains in Russia's imports from Afghanistan in the 1st quarter of 2016 over the 1st quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - an increase of $71,089;
  • Carpets and other textile floor coverings (HS code 57) - an increase of $21,240.

The largest declines in Russia's imports from Afghanistan in the 1st quarter of 2016 over the 1st quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Edible fruit and nuts; peel of citrus fruit or melons (HS code 08) - a decrease of $157,425.
