Russia's Trade with Japan

In the 1st quarter of 2016, Russia's trade with Japan was $3,688,954,398, down 39.13% ($2,371,258,862) from the 1st quarter of 2015.

Russia's exports to Japan in the 1st quarter of 2016 were $2,336,657,299, down 46.26% ($2,011,382,608) from the 1st quarter of 2015.

Russia's imports from Japan in the 1st quarter of 2016 were $1,352,297,099, down 21.02% ($359,876,254) from the 1st quarter of 2015.

Russia's trade surplus with Japan in the 1st quarter of 2016 was $984,360,200, a 62.66% decrease ($1,651,506,354) over the 1st quarter of 2015.

Japan was Russia's 7th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2016 (down from 6th in the 1st quarter of 2015), accounting for 3.7911% of Russia's total trade (down from 4.5807% in the 1st quarter of 2015).

Japan was Russia's 8th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2016 (down from 6th in the 1st quarter of 2015), accounting for 3.8077% of Russia's total exports (down from 4.8169% in the 1st quarter of 2015).

Japan was Russia's 7th largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2016 (down from 6th in the 1st quarter of 2015), accounting for 3.7628% of Russia's total imports (down from 4.0735% in the 1st quarter of 2015).

Russia's Exports to Japan

The major share of Russian exports to Japan in the 1st quarter of 2016 (and in the 1st quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 84.12% of Russia's total exports to Japan (87.96% in the 1st quarter of 2015);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 6.96% of Russia's total exports to Japan (6.41% in the 1st quarter of 2015);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 4.44% of Russia's total exports to Japan (2.28% in the 1st quarter of 2015);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 2.60% of Russia's total exports to Japan (2.04% in the 1st quarter of 2015);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 1.08% of Russia's total exports to Japan (0.58% in the 1st quarter of 2015).

The largest gains in Russia's exports to Japan in the 1st quarter of 2016 over the 1st quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Ores, slag and ash (HS code 26) - an increase of $22,962,395;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $7,674,426.

The largest declines in Russia's exports to Japan in the 1st quarter of 2016 over the 1st quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $1,882,378,157;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - a decrease of $107,892,939;
  • Natural or cultured pearls, precious or semi-precious stones,precious metals, metals clad with precious metal and articles thereof; imitation jewelry; coin (HS code 71) - a decrease of $27,932,751;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - a decrease of $13,683,887;

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 13.52% of Russia's total imports from Japan (11.97% in the 1st quarter of 2015);
