Russia’s Trade with Japan

In the 2nd quarter of 2016, Russia’s trade with Japan was $3,649,138,894, down 32.37% ($1,746,840,886) from the 2nd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s exports to Japan in the 2nd quarter of 2016 were $2,110,448,197, down 41.05% ($1,469,896,900) from the 2nd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s imports from Japan in the 2nd quarter of 2016 were $1,538,690,697, down 15.25% ($276,943,986) from the 2nd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s trade surplus with Japan in the 2nd quarter of 2016 was $571,757,500, a 67.60% decrease ($1,192,952,914) over the 2nd quarter of 2015.

Japan was Russia’s 8th largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2016 (just as in the 2nd quarter of 2015), accounting for 3.3528% of Russia’s total trade (down from 3.9579% in the 2nd quarter of 2015).

Japan was Russia’s 9th largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2016 (down from 7th in the 2nd quarter of 2015), accounting for 3.1761% of Russia’s total exports (down from 3.9110% in the 2nd quarter of 2015).

Japan was Russia’s 6th largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2016 (just as in the 2nd quarter of 2015), accounting for 3.6298% of Russia’s total imports (down from 4.0538% in the 2nd quarter of 2015).

Russia’s Exports to Japan

The major share of Russian exports to Japan in the 2nd quarter of 2016 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 75.99% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (83.11% in the 2nd quarter of 2015);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 9.89% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (7.31% in the 2nd quarter of 2015);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 4.94% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (2.57% in the 2nd quarter of 2015);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 3.34% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (3.70% in the 2nd quarter of 2015);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 3.08% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (1.89% in the 2nd quarter of 2015);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 2.12% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (0.88% in the 2nd quarter of 2015).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Japan in the 2nd quarter of 2016 over the 2nd quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $13,913,674;
  • Fish and crustaceans, molluscs and other aquatic invertebrates (HS code 03) - an increase of $10,694,786.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Japan in the 2nd quarter of 2016 over the 2nd quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $1,367,581,425;
  • Ships, boats and floating structures (HS code 89) - a decrease of $59,308,084;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - a decrease of $52,572,975.

Russia’s Imports from Japan

The major share of Russian imports from Japan in the 2nd quarter of 2016 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 78.26% of Russia’s total imports from Japan (81.66% in the 2nd quarter of 2015);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 12.26% of Russia’s total imports from Japan (10.55% in the 2nd quarter of 2015);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 2.82% of Russia’s total imports from Japan (3.25% in the 2nd quarter of 2015);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 1.38% of Russia’s total imports from Japan (0.91% in the 2nd quarter of 2015);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 1.04% of Russia’s total imports from Japan (0.53% in the 2nd quarter of 2015).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Japan in the 2nd quarter of 2016 over the 2nd quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Miscellaneous manufactured articles (HS code 96) - an increase of $10,943,007;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - an increase of $7,169,176;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $6,459,110.

The largest declines in Russia’s imports from Japan in the 2nd quarter of 2016 over the 2nd quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $216,399,509;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $49,689,985;

  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - a decrease of $6,693,220;
