Russia’s Trade with North Korea

In the 2nd quarter of 2016, Russia’s trade with North Korea was $18,180,794, down 31.61% ($8,402,793) from the 2nd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s exports to North Korea in the 2nd quarter of 2016 were $16,698,120, down 36.37% ($9,543,371) from the 2nd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s imports from North Korea in the 2nd quarter of 2016 totaled $1,482,674, up 333.41% ($1,140,578) from the 2nd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s trade surplus with North Korea in the 2nd quarter of 2016 was $15,215,446, a 41.25% decrease ($10,683,949) over the 2nd quarter of 2015.

North Korea was Russia’s 113th largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2016 (down from 111th in the 2nd quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.0167% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.0195% in the 2nd quarter of 2015).

North Korea was Russia’s 97th largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2016 (up from 99th in the 2nd quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.0251% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.0287% in the 2nd quarter of 2015).

North Korea was Russia’s 123rd largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2016 (up from 136th in the 2nd quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.0035% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.0008% in the 2nd quarter of 2015).

Russia’s Exports to North Korea

The major share of Russian exports to North Korea in the 2nd quarter of 2016 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 72.46% of Russia’s total exports to North Korea (80.25% in the 2nd quarter of 2015);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 18.38% of Russia’s total exports to North Korea (12.39% in the 2nd quarter of 2015);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 7.11% of Russia’s total exports to North Korea (0.44% in the 2nd quarter of 2015);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 1.08% of Russia’s total exports to North Korea (0.03% in the 2nd quarter of 2015);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 0.61% of Russia’s total exports to North Korea (1.47% in the 2nd quarter of 2015);

  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $742,568;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - an increase of $325,417;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - an increase of $170,895.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to North Korea in the 2nd quarter of 2016 over the 2nd quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $1,338,488;
