Russia’s Trade with Afghanistan

In the 3rd quarter of 2016, Russia’s trade with Afghanistan totaled $45,974,122, up 52.67% ($15,860,273) from the 3rd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in the 3rd quarter of 2016 totaled $44,692,547, up 58.75% ($16,538,973) from the 3rd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s imports from Afghanistan in the 3rd quarter of 2016 were $1,281,575, down 34.62% ($678,700) from the 3rd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s trade surplus with Afghanistan in the 3rd quarter of 2016 was $43,410,972, a 65.73% increase ($17,217,673) over the 3rd quarter of 2015.

Afghanistan was Russia’s 102nd largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (up from 112th in the 3rd quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.0377% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0237% in the 3rd quarter of 2015).

Afghanistan was Russia’s 83rd largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (up from 96th in the 3rd quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.0621% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0354% in the 3rd quarter of 2015).

Afghanistan was Russia’s 127th largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (down from 117th in the 3rd quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.0026% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.0041% in the 3rd quarter of 2015).

Russia’s Exports to Afghanistan

The major share of Russian exports to Afghanistan in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 52.54% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (15.48% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 16.69% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (31.42% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 15.02% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (15.20% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 11.88% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (9.01% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Chemical products (HS codes codes 28-40) - 2.38% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (4.17% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 0.81% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (19.17% in the 3rd quarter of 2015).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in the 3rd quarter of 2016 over the 3rd quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $19,125,445;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $2,954,835;
  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - an increase of $2,494,648;
  • Miscellaneous chemical products (HS code 38) - an increase of $283,576.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in the 3rd quarter of 2016 over the 3rd quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $3,257,356;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $1,377,408;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $969,075;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - a decrease of $429,528;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - a decrease of $374,705;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - a decrease of $176,625;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - a decrease of $173,323;
  • Products of the milling industry; malt; starches; inulin; wheat gluten (HS code 11) - a decrease of $137,180.

Russia’s Imports from Afghanistan

The major share of Russian imports from Afghanistan in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 99.74% of Russia’s total imports from Afghanistan (99.64% in the 3rd quarter of 2015).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Afghanistan in the 3rd quarter of 2016 over the 3rd quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - an increase of $141,132.

The largest declines in Russia’s imports from Afghanistan in the 3rd quarter of 2016 over the 3rd quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Edible fruit and nuts; peel of citrus fruit or melons (HS code 08) - a decrease of $816,171;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $4,072.
