Russia’s Trade with South Africa

In the 3rd quarter of 2016, Russia’s trade with South Africa was $263,197,951, down 22.60% ($76,839,669) from the 3rd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s exports to South Africa in the 3rd quarter of 2016 were $79,142,414, down 48.32% ($74,009,662) from the 3rd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s imports from South Africa in the 3rd quarter of 2016 were $184,055,537, down 1.51% ($2,830,007) from the 3rd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s trade deficit with South Africa in the 3rd quarter of 2016 was $104,913,123, a 211.01% increase ($71,179,655) over the 3rd quarter of 2015.

South Africa was Russia’s 57th largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (down from 48th in the 3rd quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.2159% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.2679% in the 3rd quarter of 2015).

South Africa was Russia’s 71st largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (down from 58th in the 3rd quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.1100% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.1926% in the 3rd quarter of 2015).

South Africa was Russia’s 41st largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (down from 40th in the 3rd quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.3683% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.3944% in the 3rd quarter of 2015).

Russia’s Exports to South Africa

The major share of Russian exports to South Africa in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 69.96% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (65.16% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 8.02% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (1.62% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 7.67% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (26.71% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 6.67% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (1.93% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 4.79% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (2.78% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);

  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - an increase of $2,630,676;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $1,045,105;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $373,247;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $368,195;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - an increase of $350,880.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to South Africa in the 3rd quarter of 2016 over the 3rd quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Cereals (HS code 10) - a decrease of $44,435,418;
  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - a decrease of $34,573,002;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $665,536;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - a decrease of $639,498;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $461,992;
  • Pulp of wood or of other fibrous cellulosic material; waste and scrap of paper or paperboard (HS code 47) - a decrease of $459,003;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - a decrease of $404,636;
  • Miscellaneous chemical products (HS code 38) - a decrease of $317,456.

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 46.00% of Russia’s total imports from South Africa (53.28% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 25.68% of Russia’s total imports from South Africa (19.64% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 12.20% of Russia’s total imports from South Africa (15.82% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 8.31% of Russia’s total imports from South Africa (7.68% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
