Russia’s Trade with Syria

In the 3rd quarter of 2016, Russia’s trade with Syria totaled $36,895,932, up 21.40% ($6,504,713) from the 3rd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s exports to Syria in the 3rd quarter of 2016 totaled $35,587,490, up 25.60% ($7,253,650) from the 3rd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s imports from Syria in the 3rd quarter of 2016 were $1,308,442, down 36.40% ($748,937) from the 3rd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s trade surplus with Syria in the 3rd quarter of 2016 was $34,279,048, a 30.46% increase ($8,002,587) over the 3rd quarter of 2015.

Syria was Russia’s 105th largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (up from 111th in the 3rd quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.0303% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0239% in the 3rd quarter of 2015).

Syria was Russia’s 92nd largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (up from 95th in the 3rd quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.0495% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0356% in the 3rd quarter of 2015).

Syria was Russia’s 124th largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (down from 115th in the 3rd quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.0026% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.0043% in the 3rd quarter of 2015).

Russia’s Exports to Syria

The major share of Russian exports to Syria in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 20.84% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (51.33% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 10.10% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (12.65% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 8.57% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (16.46% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 6.56% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (2.19% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 2.01% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (0.02% in the 3rd quarter of 2015).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Syria in the 3rd quarter of 2016 over the 3rd quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $1,165,699;
  • Explosives; pyrotechnic products; matches; pyrophoric alloys; certain combustible preparations (HS code 36) - an increase of $1,010,009;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - an increase of $432,876;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $398,289;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - an increase of $360,210;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - an increase of $315,435;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - an increase of $259,090.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Syria in the 3rd quarter of 2016 over the 3rd quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes (HS code 24) - a decrease of $4,821,481;
  • Printed books, newspapers, pictures and other products of the printing industry; manuscripts, typescripts and plans (HS code 49) - a decrease of $2,695,993;
  • Products of the milling industry; malt; starches; inulin; wheat gluten (HS code 11) - a decrease of $1,639,263;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - a decrease of $556,825;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $298,224;
  • Furniture; bedding, mattresses, mattress supports, cushions and similar stuffed furnishings; lamps and lighting fittings, not elsewhere specified or included; illuminated sign illuminated nameplates and the like; prefabricated buildings (HS code 94) - a decrease of $128,341.
