Russia’s Trade with Ukraine

In the 3rd quarter of 2016, Russia’s trade with Ukraine was $2,794,178,895, down 18.50% ($634,144,063) from the 3rd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s exports to Ukraine in the 3rd quarter of 2016 were $1,699,512,634, down 9.28% ($173,860,282) from the 3rd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s imports from Ukraine in the 3rd quarter of 2016 were $1,094,666,261, down 29.60% ($460,283,781) from the 3rd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s trade surplus with Ukraine in the 3rd quarter of 2016 was $604,846,373, a 89.95% increase ($286,423,499) over the 3rd quarter of 2015.

Ukraine was Russia’s 13th largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (down from 11th in the 3rd quarter of 2015), accounting for 2.2918% of Russia’s total trade (down from 2.7013% in the 3rd quarter of 2015).

Ukraine was Russia’s 13th largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (down from 12th in the 3rd quarter of 2015), accounting for 2.3622% of Russia’s total exports (up from 2.3557% in the 3rd quarter of 2015).

Ukraine was Russia’s 9th largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (down from 6th in the 3rd quarter of 2015), accounting for 2.1903% of Russia’s total imports (down from 3.2812% in the 3rd quarter of 2015).

Russia’s Exports to Ukraine

The major share of Russian exports to Ukraine in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 31.38% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (32.77% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 27.36% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (32.11% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 17.12% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (14.23% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 8.64% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (8.38% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 7.22% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (5.29% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 3.68% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (3.17% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Ukraine in the 3rd quarter of 2016 over the 3rd quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $14,956,074;
  • Railway or tramway locomotives, rolling-stock and parts thereof; railway or tramway track fixtures and fittings and parts thereof; mechanical (including electro-mechanical) traffic signalling equipment of all kinds (HS code 86) - an increase of $11,523,983;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - an increase of $8,119,663;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - an increase of $7,061,166;
  • Salt; sulfur; earths and stone; plastering materials, lime and cement (HS code 25) - an increase of $6,811,844.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Ukraine in the 3rd quarter of 2016 over the 3rd quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:
