Russia’s Trade with Abkhazia

In the 4th quarter of 2016, Russia’s trade with Abkhazia totaled $68,031,328, up 19.32% ($11,015,167) from the 4th quarter of 2015.

Russia’s exports to Abkhazia in the 4th quarter of 2016 totaled $50,022,453, up 16.07% ($6,926,342) from the 4th quarter of 2015.

Russia’s imports from Abkhazia in the 4th quarter of 2016 totaled $18,008,875, up 29.37% ($4,088,825) from the 4th quarter of 2015.

Russia’s trade surplus with Abkhazia in the 4th quarter of 2016 was $32,013,578, a 9.73% increase ($2,837,517) over the 4th quarter of 2015.

Abkhazia was Russia’s 92nd largest trading partner in the 4th quarter of 2016 (up from 93rd in the 4th quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.0499% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0436% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

Abkhazia was Russia’s 81st largest export market in the 4th quarter of 2016 (up from 84th in the 4th quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.0597% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0523% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

Abkhazia was Russia’s 91st largest supplier in the 4th quarter of 2016 (down from 90th in the 4th quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.0343% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.0288% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

Russia’s Exports to Abkhazia

The major share of Russian exports to Abkhazia in the 4th quarter of 2016 (and in the 4th quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 30.96% of Russia’s total exports to Abkhazia (29.93% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 26.98% of Russia’s total exports to Abkhazia (33.24% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 13.22% of Russia’s total exports to Abkhazia (11.26% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 10.52% of Russia’s total exports to Abkhazia (6.67% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 7.89% of Russia’s total exports to Abkhazia (8.08% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 3.80% of Russia’s total exports to Abkhazia (4.48% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Abkhazia in the 4th quarter of 2016 over the 4th quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - an increase of $833,502;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - an increase of $808,489;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - an increase of $477,015;
  • Glass and glassware (HS code 70) - an increase of $319,378;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - an increase of $251,096;
  • Salt; sulfur; earths and stone; plastering materials, lime and cement (HS code 25) - an increase of $210,286;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $197,874;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - an increase of $187,930;
  • Cocoa and cocoa preparations (HS code 18) - an increase of $178,119;
  • Preparations of cereals, flour, starch or milk; bakers’ wares (HS code 19) - an increase of $177,843;
  • Preparations of meat, of fish or of crustaceans, molluscs or other aquatic invertebrates (HS code 16) - an increase of $172,624.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Abkhazia in the 4th quarter of 2016 over the 4th quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes (HS code 24) - a decrease of $1,623,287.

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Abkhazia in the 4th quarter of 2016 over the 4th quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Beverages, spirits and vinegar (HS code 22) - an increase of $5,576,422;
  • Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers (HS code 07) - an increase of $132,767;
