Russia’s Trade with Belarus

In the 4th quarter of 2016, Russia’s trade with Belarus totaled $6,261,110,842, up 1.64% ($100,767,292) from the 4th quarter of 2015.

Russia’s exports to Belarus in the 4th quarter of 2016 were $3,698,051,570, down 5.87% ($230,444,575) from the 4th quarter of 2015.

Russia’s imports from Belarus in the 4th quarter of 2016 totaled $2,563,059,272, up 14.84% ($331,211,867) from the 4th quarter of 2015.

Russia’s trade surplus with Belarus in the 4th quarter of 2016 was $1,134,992,298, a 33.10% decrease ($561,656,442) over the 4th quarter of 2015.

Belarus was Russia’s 4th largest trading partner in the 4th quarter of 2016 (up from 5th in the 4th quarter of 2015), accounting for 4.5947% of Russia’s total trade (down from 4.7109% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

Belarus was Russia’s 5th largest export market in the 4th quarter of 2016 (up from 6th in the 4th quarter of 2015), accounting for 4.4110% of Russia’s total exports (down from 4.7658% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

Belarus was Russia’s 4th largest supplier in the 4th quarter of 2016 (up from 5th in the 4th quarter of 2015), accounting for 4.8884% of Russia’s total imports (up from 4.6173% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

Russia’s Exports to Belarus

The major share of Russian exports to Belarus in the 4th quarter of 2016 (and in the 4th quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 48.17% of Russia’s total exports to Belarus (56.07% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 14.86% of Russia’s total exports to Belarus (13.33% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 11.45% of Russia’s total exports to Belarus (9.46% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 10.24% of Russia’s total exports to Belarus (9.34% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 6.47% of Russia’s total exports to Belarus (5.28% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 2.04% of Russia’s total exports to Belarus (1.80% in the 4th quarter of 2015);

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Belarus in the 4th quarter of 2016 over the 4th quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $49,593,834;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - an increase of $49,055,364;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $18,176,072;
  • Salt; sulfur; earths and stone; plastering materials, lime and cement (HS code 25) - an increase of $13,576,542.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Belarus in the 4th quarter of 2016 over the 4th quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $445,288,755;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $48,175,314;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - a decrease of $11,848,964.
