Russia’s Trade with Iran

In the 4th quarter of 2016, Russia’s trade with Iran totaled $557,025,727, up 52.55% ($191,876,042) from the 4th quarter of 2015.

Russia’s exports to Iran in the 4th quarter of 2016 totaled $456,280,566, up 57.17% ($165,961,953) from the 4th quarter of 2015.

Russia’s imports from Iran in the 4th quarter of 2016 totaled $100,745,161, up 34.63% ($25,914,089) from the 4th quarter of 2015.

Russia’s trade surplus with Iran in the 4th quarter of 2016 was $355,535,405, a 64.99% increase ($140,047,864) over the 4th quarter of 2015.

Iran was Russia’s 43rd largest trading partner in the 4th quarter of 2016 (up from 53rd in the 4th quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.4088% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.2792% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

Iran was Russia’s 38th largest export market in the 4th quarter of 2016 (up from 50th in the 4th quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.5442% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.3522% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

Iran was Russia’s 57th largest supplier in the 4th quarter of 2016 (up from 62nd in the 4th quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.1921% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.1548% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

Russia’s Exports to Iran

The major share of Russian exports to Iran in the 4th quarter of 2016 (and in the 4th quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 36.91% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (32.73% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 27.02% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (39.43% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 25.19% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (4.86% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 7.90% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (16.50% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 2.40% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (5.33% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Iran in the 4th quarter of 2016 over the 4th quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - an increase of $48,359,173;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $48,135,934;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $37,465,931;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $21,304,180;
  • Railway or tramway locomotives, rolling-stock and parts thereof; railway or tramway track fixtures and fittings and parts thereof; mechanical (including electro-mechanical) traffic signalling equipment of all kinds (HS code 86) - an increase of $18,160,209;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $7,889,252;
  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - an increase of $2,713,718;
  • Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers (HS code 07) - an increase of $2,518,553;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - an increase of $2,167,060;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - an increase of $1,690,031.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Iran in the 4th quarter of 2016 over the 4th quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - a decrease of $10,033,876;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $7,034,045;
  • Printed books, newspapers, pictures and other products of the printing industry; manuscripts, typescripts and plans (HS code 49) - a decrease of $6,143,652;
  • Ships, boats and floating structures (HS code 89) - a decrease of $2,963,412;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $1,993,281.

Russia’s Imports from Iran

The major share of Russian imports from Iran in the 4th quarter of 2016 (and in the 4th quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 13.44% of Russia’s total imports from Iran (14.06% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 1.18% of Russia’s total imports from Iran (1.23% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 0.81% of Russia’s total imports from Iran (1.13% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
