Russia’s Trade with South Africa

In the 4th quarter of 2016, Russia’s trade with South Africa was $129,594,453, down 12.02% ($17,712,249) from the 4th quarter of 2015.

Russia’s exports to South Africa in the 4th quarter of 2016 were $22,513,817, down 52.09% ($24,476,313) from the 4th quarter of 2015.

Russia’s imports from South Africa in the 4th quarter of 2016 totaled $107,080,636, up 6.74% ($6,764,064) from the 4th quarter of 2015.

Russia’s trade deficit with South Africa in the 4th quarter of 2016 was $84,566,819, a 58.58% increase ($31,240,377) over the 4th quarter of 2015.

South Africa was Russia’s 80th largest trading partner in the 4th quarter of 2016 (down from 73rd in the 4th quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.0951% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.1126% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

South Africa was Russia’s 98th largest export market in the 4th quarter of 2016 (down from 83rd in the 4th quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.0269% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.0570% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

South Africa was Russia’s 55th largest supplier in the 4th quarter of 2016 (just as in the 4th quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.2042% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.2075% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

Russia’s Exports to South Africa

The major share of Russian exports to South Africa in the 4th quarter of 2016 (and in the 4th quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 19.84% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (9.06% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 16.79% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (6.15% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 16.49% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (3.82% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 16.19% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (65.60% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 14.13% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (11.33% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 8.66% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (3.65% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to South Africa in the 4th quarter of 2016 over the 4th quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $1,337,949;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - an increase of $1,139,414;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - an increase of $847,637;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $523,996;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - an increase of $330,177;
  • Pulp of wood or of other fibrous cellulosic material; waste and scrap of paper or paperboard (HS code 47) - an increase of $215,229;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $207,557;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - an increase of $177,709;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $175,512.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to South Africa in the 4th quarter of 2016 over the 4th quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Cereals (HS code 10) - a decrease of $26,401,729;
  • Ores, slag and ash (HS code 26) - a decrease of $1,453,810;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $740,456;
  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - a decrease of $682,190;
  • Tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes (HS code 24) - a decrease of $641,171;
  • Tools, implements, cutlery, spoons and forks, of base metal; parts thereof of base metal (HS code 82) - a decrease of $595,930;
  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - a decrease of $202,614;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - a decrease of $187,413;
  • Miscellaneous edible preparations (HS code 21) - a decrease of $128,143;
  • Miscellaneous chemical products (HS code 38) - a decrease of $93,300.

Russia’s Imports from South Africa

The major share of Russian imports from South Africa in the 4th quarter of 2016 (and in the 4th quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 31.13% of Russia’s total imports from South Africa (43.33% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 27.14% of Russia’s total imports from South Africa (18.24% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 21.42% of Russia’s total imports from South Africa (20.82% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 10.50% of Russia’s total imports from South Africa (9.49% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
