Russia’s Trade with Turkmenistan

In the 4th quarter of 2016, Russia’s trade with Turkmenistan was $135,790,209, down 56.39% ($175,590,836) from the 4th quarter of 2015.

Russia’s exports to Turkmenistan in the 4th quarter of 2016 were $109,040,747, down 62.78% ($183,921,178) from the 4th quarter of 2015.

Russia’s imports from Turkmenistan in the 4th quarter of 2016 totaled $26,749,462, up 45.23% ($8,330,342) from the 4th quarter of 2015.

Russia’s trade surplus with Turkmenistan in the 4th quarter of 2016 was $82,291,285, a 70.03% decrease ($192,251,520) over the 4th quarter of 2015.

Turkmenistan was Russia’s 77th largest trading partner in the 4th quarter of 2016 (down from 59th in the 4th quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.0996% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.2381% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

Turkmenistan was Russia’s 70th largest export market in the 4th quarter of 2016 (down from 49th in the 4th quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.1301% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.3554% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

Turkmenistan was Russia’s 81st largest supplier in the 4th quarter of 2016 (up from 89th in the 4th quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.0510% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.0381% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

Russia’s Exports to Turkmenistan

The major share of Russian exports to Turkmenistan in the 4th quarter of 2016 (and in the 4th quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 27.55% of Russia’s total exports to Turkmenistan (15.92% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 22.68% of Russia’s total exports to Turkmenistan (20.02% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 15.96% of Russia’s total exports to Turkmenistan (6.68% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 12.03% of Russia’s total exports to Turkmenistan (36.21% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 8.66% of Russia’s total exports to Turkmenistan (3.98% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Turkmenistan in the 4th quarter of 2016 over the 4th quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Essential oils and resinoids; perfumery, cosmetic or toilet preparations (HS code 33) - an increase of $1,664,160;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - an increase of $878,945;
  • Sugars and sugar confectionery (HS code 17) - an increase of $816,488;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - an increase of $645,967;
  • Soap, organic surface-active agents, washing preparations, lubricating preparations, artificial waxes, prepared waxes, polishing or scouring preparations, candles and similar articles, modeling pastes, "dental waxes" and dental preparations with a basis of plaster (HS code 34) - an increase of $644,635;
  • Ceramic products (HS code 69) - an increase of $356,370.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Turkmenistan in the 4th quarter of 2016 over the 4th quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - a decrease of $55,257,579;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $37,186,944;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $28,364,195;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - a decrease of $3,840,415;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - a decrease of $3,245,834;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $3,183,747;
  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - a decrease of $2,751,089;
  • Preparations of cereals, flour, starch or milk; bakers’ wares (HS code 19) - a decrease of $2,003,779;
  • Products of the milling industry; malt; starches; inulin; wheat gluten (HS code 11) - a decrease of $1,835,057;

Russia’s Imports from Turkmenistan

The major share of Russian imports from Turkmenistan in the 4th quarter of 2016 (and in the 4th quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 65.85% of Russia’s total imports from Turkmenistan (61.89% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 28.14% of Russia’s total imports from Turkmenistan (10.07% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 3.71% of Russia’s total imports from Turkmenistan (25.11% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 1.62% of Russia’s total imports from Turkmenistan (0.00% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
