Russia’s Trade with Canada

In the 1st quarter of 2017, Russia’s trade with Canada totaled $374,324,877, up 55.36% ($133,381,435) from the 1st quarter of 2016.

Russia’s exports to Canada in the 1st quarter of 2017 totaled $98,682,770, up 7.61% ($6,981,704) from the 1st quarter of 2016.

Russia’s imports from Canada in the 1st quarter of 2017 totaled $275,642,107, up 84.69% ($126,399,731) from the 1st quarter of 2016.

Russia’s trade deficit with Canada in the 1st quarter of 2017 was $176,959,337, a 207.53% increase ($119,418,027) over the 1st quarter of 2016.

Canada was Russia’s 51st largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2017 (up from 57th in the 1st quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.2912% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.2482% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

Canada was Russia’s 65th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2017 (just as in the 1st quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.1184% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.1496% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

Canada was Russia’s 33rd largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2017 (up from 41st in the 1st quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.6096% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.4169% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

Russia’s Exports to Canada

The major share of Russian exports to Canada in the 1st quarter of 2017 (and in the 1st quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 30.61% of Russia’s total exports to Canada (25.35% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 29.18% of Russia’s total exports to Canada (38.87% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 17.49% of Russia’s total exports to Canada (8.34% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 6.20% of Russia’s total exports to Canada (2.50% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 5.69% of Russia’s total exports to Canada (3.89% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 2.52% of Russia’s total exports to Canada (1.75% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - an increase of $5,037,825;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - an increase of $3,341,795;
  • Nickel and articles thereof (HS code 75) - an increase of $2,427,972;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - an increase of $2,406,777;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $1,865,987;

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Canada in the 1st quarter of 2017 over the 1st quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $10,645,913;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - a decrease of $1,011,567;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - a decrease of $767,572.

  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 6.89% of Russia’s total imports from Canada (11.81% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
