Russia’s Trade with North Korea

In the 1st quarter of 2017, Russia’s trade with North Korea totaled $31,837,260, up 85.94% ($14,714,762) from the 1st quarter of 2016.

Russia’s exports to North Korea in the 1st quarter of 2017 totaled $31,416,494, up 134.47% ($18,017,639) from the 1st quarter of 2016.

Russia’s imports from North Korea in the 1st quarter of 2017 were $420,766, down 88.70% ($3,302,877) from the 1st quarter of 2016.

Russia’s trade surplus with North Korea in the 1st quarter of 2017 was $30,995,728, a 220.36% increase ($21,320,516) over the 1st quarter of 2016.

North Korea was Russia’s 106th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2017 (up from 114th in the 1st quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0248% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0176% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

North Korea was Russia’s 89th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2017 (up from 101st in the 1st quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0377% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0219% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

North Korea was Russia’s 134th largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2017 (down from 100th in the 1st quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0009% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.0104% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

Russia’s Exports to North Korea

The major share of Russian exports to North Korea in the 1st quarter of 2017 (and in the 1st quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 90.77% of Russia’s total exports to North Korea (87.43% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 7.18% of Russia’s total exports to North Korea (10.20% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 1.55% of Russia’s total exports to North Korea (1.17% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to North Korea in the 1st quarter of 2017 over the 1st quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $16,726,635;
  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - an increase of $1,079,791;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $193,285;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $145,392;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - an increase of $96,996.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to North Korea in the 1st quarter of 2017 over the 1st quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Fish and crustaceans, molluscs and other aquatic invertebrates (HS code 03) - a decrease of $184,726;
  • Products of the milling industry; malt; starches; inulin; wheat gluten (HS code 11) - a decrease of $160,296;
  • Pulp of wood or of other fibrous cellulosic material; waste and scrap of paper or paperboard (HS code 47) - a decrease of $95,330.

Russia’s Imports from North Korea

The major share of Russian imports from North Korea in the 1st quarter of 2017 (and in the 1st quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 40.78% of Russia’s total imports from North Korea (3.92% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 24.18% of Russia’s total imports from North Korea (2.20% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 1.96% of Russia’s total imports from North Korea (0.00% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 0.81% of Russia’s total imports from North Korea (8.18% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
