Russia’s Trade with Syria

In the 1st quarter of 2017, Russia’s trade with Syria totaled $165,784,473, up 113.73% ($88,218,614) from the 1st quarter of 2016.

Russia’s exports to Syria in the 1st quarter of 2017 totaled $164,841,496, up 121.45% ($90,405,772) from the 1st quarter of 2016.

Russia’s imports from Syria in the 1st quarter of 2017 were $942,977, down 69.87% ($2,187,158) from the 1st quarter of 2016.

Russia’s trade surplus with Syria in the 1st quarter of 2017 was $163,898,519, a 129.85% increase ($92,592,930) over the 1st quarter of 2016.

Syria was Russia’s 67th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2017 (up from 80th in the 1st quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.1290% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0799% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

Syria was Russia’s 56th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2017 (up from 69th in the 1st quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.1978% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.1215% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

Syria was Russia’s 128th largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2017 (down from 105th in the 1st quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0021% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.0087% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

Russia’s Exports to Syria

The major share of Russian exports to Syria in the 1st quarter of 2017 (and in the 1st quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 78.42% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (21.96% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 8.61% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (1.94% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 1.48% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (3.58% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 1.21% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (1.39% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Syria in the 1st quarter of 2017 over the 1st quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes (HS code 24) - an increase of $100,111,479;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $14,233,734;
  • Printed books, newspapers, pictures and other products of the printing industry; manuscripts, typescripts and plans (HS code 49) - an increase of $11,083,842;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $988,185;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $890,057;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - an increase of $771,392;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - an increase of $760,620;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $510,995.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Syria in the 1st quarter of 2017 over the 1st quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Explosives; pyrotechnic products; matches; pyrophoric alloys; certain combustible preparations (HS code 36) - a decrease of $2,154,182;
  • Products of the milling industry; malt; starches; inulin; wheat gluten (HS code 11) - a decrease of $1,393,897.

Russia’s Imports from Syria

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Syria in the 1st quarter of 2017 over the 1st quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - an increase of $32,751;
  • Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers (HS code 07) - an increase of $31,551;
