Russia’s Trade with North Korea

In the 2nd quarter of 2017, Russia’s trade with North Korea totaled $29,333,784, up 61.34% ($11,152,990) from the 2nd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s exports to North Korea in the 2nd quarter of 2017 totaled $27,902,255, up 67.10% ($11,204,135) from the 2nd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s imports from North Korea in the 2nd quarter of 2017 were $1,431,529, down 3.45% ($51,145) from the 2nd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s trade surplus with North Korea in the 2nd quarter of 2017 was $26,470,726, a 73.97% increase ($11,255,280) over the 2nd quarter of 2016.

North Korea was Russia’s 112th largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (up from 113th in the 2nd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0210% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0167% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

North Korea was Russia’s 96th largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (up from 97th in the 2nd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0332% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0251% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

North Korea was Russia’s 122nd largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (up from 123rd in the 2nd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0026% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.0035% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

Russia’s Exports to North Korea

The major share of Russian exports to North Korea in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 81.13% of Russia’s total exports to North Korea (72.46% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 12.85% of Russia’s total exports to North Korea (18.38% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 3.43% of Russia’s total exports to North Korea (1.08% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 0.91% of Russia’s total exports to North Korea (7.11% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to North Korea in the 2nd quarter of 2017 over the 2nd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $10,425,595;
  • Fish and crustaceans, molluscs and other aquatic invertebrates (HS code 03) - an increase of $1,347,414;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $929,563;
  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - an increase of $354,436;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $193,148;
  • Salt; sulfur; earths and stone; plastering materials, lime and cement (HS code 25) - an increase of $111,409;
  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - an increase of $94,050.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to North Korea in the 2nd quarter of 2017 over the 2nd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Products of the milling industry; malt; starches; inulin; wheat gluten (HS code 11) - a decrease of $1,322,715;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $683,858;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $274,726;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - a decrease of $160,608.

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 28.15% of Russia’s total imports from North Korea (2.65% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 25.52% of Russia’s total imports from North Korea (0.42% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
