Russia’s Trade with South Africa

In the 2nd quarter of 2017, Russia’s trade with South Africa totaled $218,415,613, up 2.03% ($4,355,020) from the 2nd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s exports to South Africa in the 2nd quarter of 2017 were $49,362,266, down 25.52% ($16,911,933) from the 2nd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s imports from South Africa in the 2nd quarter of 2017 totaled $169,053,347, up 14.39% ($21,266,953) from the 2nd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s trade deficit with South Africa in the 2nd quarter of 2017 was $119,691,081, a 46.84% increase ($38,178,886) over the 2nd quarter of 2016.

South Africa was Russia’s 65th largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (down from 63rd in the 2nd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.1563% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.1967% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

South Africa was Russia’s 86th largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (down from 71st in the 2nd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0588% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.0997% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

South Africa was Russia’s 49th largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (up from 50th in the 2nd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.3030% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.3486% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

Russia’s Exports to South Africa

The major share of Russian exports to South Africa in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 41.33% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (74.74% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 28.07% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (2.57% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 11.11% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (6.52% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 9.92% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (3.20% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 4.86% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (4.39% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 4.64% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (8.12% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

  • Pulp of wood or of other fibrous cellulosic material; waste and scrap of paper or paperboard (HS code 47) - an increase of $1,520,274;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - an increase of $1,357,985;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - an increase of $951,270;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - an increase of $901,974;
  • Salt; sulfur; earths and stone; plastering materials, lime and cement (HS code 25) - an increase of $314,453;
  • Tools, implements, cutlery, spoons and forks, of base metal; parts thereof of base metal (HS code 82) - an increase of $233,044.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to South Africa in the 2nd quarter of 2017 over the 2nd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Cereals (HS code 10) - a decrease of $28,895,386;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - a decrease of $2,564,902;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - a decrease of $695,850;
  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - a decrease of $504,717;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - a decrease of $458,729.
