Russia’s Trade with the US

In the 2nd quarter of 2017, Russia’s trade with the US totaled $5,954,654,504, up 38.28% ($1,648,432,980) from the 2nd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s exports to the US in the 2nd quarter of 2017 totaled $2,577,945,465, up 15.74% ($350,493,023) from the 2nd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s imports from the US in the 2nd quarter of 2017 totaled $3,376,709,039, up 62.44% ($1,297,939,957) from the 2nd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s trade balance with the US went from a surplus of $148,683,360 in the 2nd quarter of 2016, to a deficit of $798,763,574 in the 2nd quarter of 2017.

The US was Russia’s 6th largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (just as in the 2nd quarter of 2016), accounting for 4.2607% of Russia’s total trade (up from 3.9565% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

The US was Russia’s 11th largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (down from 8th in the 2nd quarter of 2016), accounting for 3.0700% of Russia’s total exports (down from 3.3522% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

The US was Russia’s 3rd largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (up from 4th in the 2nd quarter of 2016), accounting for 6.0531% of Russia’s total imports (up from 4.9038% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

Russia’s Exports to the US

The major share of Russian exports to the US in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 38.46% of Russia’s total exports to the US (32.67% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 27.98% of Russia’s total exports to the US (33.62% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 14.55% of Russia’s total exports to the US (17.52% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 7.75% of Russia’s total exports to the US (5.37% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 6.23% of Russia’s total exports to the US (8.04% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 1.81% of Russia’s total exports to the US (1.55% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to the US in the 2nd quarter of 2017 over the 2nd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $217,167,240;
  • Natural or cultured pearls, precious or semi-precious stones,precious metals, metals clad with precious metal and articles thereof; imitation jewelry; coin (HS code 71) - an increase of $80,253,694;
  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - an increase of $47,134,814;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - an increase of $22,623,069;
  • Other base metals; cermets; articles thereof (HS code 81) - an increase of $11,943,262;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - an increase of $11,753,744;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $11,360,136;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - an increase of $8,581,123.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to the US in the 2nd quarter of 2017 over the 2nd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - a decrease of $70,806,538;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $32,453,759;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $27,179,383.
