Russia’s Trade with Ukraine

In the 2nd quarter of 2017, Russia’s trade with Ukraine totaled $3,125,213,427, up 28.59% ($694,826,846) from the 2nd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s exports to Ukraine in the 2nd quarter of 2017 totaled $1,941,955,103, up 35.07% ($504,206,630) from the 2nd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s imports from Ukraine in the 2nd quarter of 2017 totaled $1,183,258,324, up 19.20% ($190,620,216) from the 2nd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s trade surplus with Ukraine in the 2nd quarter of 2017 was $758,696,779, a 70.45% increase ($313,586,414) over the 2nd quarter of 2016.

Ukraine was Russia’s 13th largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (just as in the 2nd quarter of 2016), accounting for 2.2362% of Russia’s total trade (up from 2.2330% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

Ukraine was Russia’s 14th largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (up from 15th in the 2nd quarter of 2016), accounting for 2.3126% of Russia’s total exports (up from 2.1637% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

Ukraine was Russia’s 11th largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (down from 9th in the 2nd quarter of 2016), accounting for 2.1211% of Russia’s total imports (down from 2.3416% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

Russia’s Exports to Ukraine

The major share of Russian exports to Ukraine in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 33.78% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (22.99% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 29.13% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (34.08% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 13.61% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (15.54% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 8.79% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (9.64% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 7.42% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (8.92% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 3.47% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (4.26% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 1.42% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (1.75% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Ukraine in the 2nd quarter of 2017 over the 2nd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $288,403,682;
  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - an increase of $47,340,347;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $35,310,310;
  • Ores, slag and ash (HS code 26) - an increase of $33,486,432;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - an increase of $26,972,382;
  • Meat and edible meat offal (HS code 02) - an increase of $10,972,978;
  • Glass and glassware (HS code 70) - an increase of $6,009,274.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Ukraine in the 2nd quarter of 2017 over the 2nd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - a decrease of $13,390,110;
  • Beverages, spirits and vinegar (HS code 22) - a decrease of $6,176,671.
