Russia’s Trade with Japan

In the 3rd quarter of 2017, Russia’s trade with Japan totaled $5,026,517,943, up 18.76% ($793,941,962) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s exports to Japan in the 3rd quarter of 2017 totaled $2,952,064,079, up 25.94% ($607,957,439) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s imports from Japan in the 3rd quarter of 2017 totaled $2,074,453,864, up 9.85% ($185,984,523) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s trade surplus with Japan in the 3rd quarter of 2017 was $877,610,215, a 92.61% increase ($421,972,916) over the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Japan was Russia’s 9th largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (down from 8th in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 3.4384% of Russia’s total trade (down from 3.4715% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

Japan was Russia’s 10th largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (down from 9th in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 3.4584% of Russia’s total exports (up from 3.2582% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

Japan was Russia’s 8th largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (down from 6th in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 3.4104% of Russia’s total imports (down from 3.7786% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

Russia’s Exports to Japan

The major share of Russian exports to Japan in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 75.37% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (70.22% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 8.65% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (11.34% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 5.04% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (5.16% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 3.55% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (5.07% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 3.47% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (4.13% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 3.23% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (3.29% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Japan in the 3rd quarter of 2017 over the 3rd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $570,005,063;
  • Ships, boats and floating structures (HS code 89) - an increase of $28,085,121;
  • Natural or cultured pearls, precious or semi-precious stones,precious metals, metals clad with precious metal and articles thereof; imitation jewelry; coin (HS code 71) - an increase of $18,288,872;
  • Ores, slag and ash (HS code 26) - an increase of $9,280,503.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Japan in the 3rd quarter of 2017 over the 3rd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Fish and crustaceans, molluscs and other aquatic invertebrates (HS code 03) - a decrease of $18,235,064.

Russia’s Imports from Japan

The major share of Russian imports from Japan in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 80.96% of Russia’s total imports from Japan (81.71% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 11.11% of Russia’s total imports from Japan (10.26% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 3.12% of Russia’s total imports from Japan (2.11% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 1.06% of Russia’s total imports from Japan (1.07% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Japan in the 3rd quarter of 2017 over the 3rd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Ships, boats and floating structures (HS code 89) - an increase of $17,542,663;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - an increase of $14,615,559;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - an increase of $11,621,520;
