Russia’s Trade with South Ossetia

In the 3rd quarter of 2017, Russia’s trade with South Ossetia totaled $18,163,404, up 25.79% ($3,723,956) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s exports to South Ossetia in the 3rd quarter of 2017 totaled $14,822,224, up 20.76% ($2,547,870) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s imports from South Ossetia in the 3rd quarter of 2017 totaled $3,341,180, up 54.32% ($1,176,086) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s trade surplus with South Ossetia in the 3rd quarter of 2017 was $11,481,044, a 13.57% increase ($1,371,784) over the 3rd quarter of 2016.

South Ossetia was Russia’s 126th largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (down from 117th in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0124% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0118% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

South Ossetia was Russia’s 116th largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (down from 106th in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0174% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0171% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

South Ossetia was Russia’s 110th largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (down from 106th in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0055% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.0043% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

Russia’s Exports to South Ossetia

The major share of Russian exports to South Ossetia in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 35.59% of Russia’s total exports to South Ossetia (13.23% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 15.24% of Russia’s total exports to South Ossetia (20.92% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 13.71% of Russia’s total exports to South Ossetia (24.10% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 12.48% of Russia’s total exports to South Ossetia (11.11% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 8.69% of Russia’s total exports to South Ossetia (14.45% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 7.08% of Russia’s total exports to South Ossetia (5.10% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 0.96% of Russia’s total exports to South Ossetia (1.45% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to South Ossetia in the 3rd quarter of 2017 over the 3rd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $1,367,535;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - an increase of $1,310,191;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $741,681;
  • Cotton (HS code 52) - an increase of $357,604;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - an increase of $270,787;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - an increase of $232,940;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - an increase of $227,785;
  • Beverages, spirits and vinegar (HS code 22) - an increase of $157,966;
  • Furniture; bedding, mattresses, mattress supports, cushions and similar stuffed furnishings; lamps and lighting fittings, not elsewhere specified or included; illuminated sign illuminated nameplates and the like; prefabricated buildings (HS code 94) - an increase of $153,117;
  • Tanning or dyeing extracts; dyes, pigments, paints, varnishes, putty and mastics (HS code 32) - an increase of $55,457.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to South Ossetia in the 3rd quarter of 2017 over the 3rd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes (HS code 24) - a decrease of $741,176;
  • Articles of stone, plaster, cement, asbestos, mica or similar materials (HS code 68) - a decrease of $401,510;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - a decrease of $316,022;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $237,252;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $202,832;
  • Products of the milling industry; malt; starches; inulin; wheat gluten (HS code 11) - a decrease of $143,961;
  • Preparations of cereals, flour, starch or milk; bakers’ wares (HS code 19) - a decrease of $95,920;
  • Sugars and sugar confectionery (HS code 17) - a decrease of $72,866;
  • Salt; sulfur; earths and stone; plastering materials, lime and cement (HS code 25) - a decrease of $71,885;
  • Miscellaneous chemical products (HS code 38) - a decrease of $63,431;
  • Printed books, newspapers, pictures and other products of the printing industry; manuscripts, typescripts and plans (HS code 49) - a decrease of $57,505.
