Russia’s Trade with Costa Rica

In the 4th quarter of 2017, Russia’s trade with Costa Rica totaled $54,128,353, up 24.48% ($10,645,204) from the 4th quarter of 2016.

Russia’s exports to Costa Rica in the 4th quarter of 2017 were $7,055,682, down 39.61% ($4,628,194) from the 4th quarter of 2016.

Russia’s imports from Costa Rica in the 4th quarter of 2017 totaled $47,072,671, up 48.03% ($15,273,398) from the 4th quarter of 2016.

Russia’s trade deficit with Costa Rica in the 4th quarter of 2017 was $40,016,989, a 98.94% increase ($19,901,592) over the 4th quarter of 2016.

Costa Rica was Russia’s 99th largest trading partner in the 4th quarter of 2017 (up from 103rd in the 4th quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0324% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0319% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

Costa Rica was Russia’s 122nd largest export market in the 4th quarter of 2017 (down from 112th in the 4th quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0069% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.0139% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

Costa Rica was Russia’s 73rd largest supplier in the 4th quarter of 2017 (up from 78th in the 4th quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0732% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.0606% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

Russia’s Exports to Costa Rica

The major share of Russian exports to Costa Rica in the 4th quarter of 2017 (and in the 4th quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 65.82% of Russia’s total exports to Costa Rica (24.15% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 15.45% of Russia’s total exports to Costa Rica (63.90% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 9.27% of Russia’s total exports to Costa Rica (9.88% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 4.90% of Russia’s total exports to Costa Rica (0.26% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 3.22% of Russia’s total exports to Costa Rica (0.00% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 1.31% of Russia’s total exports to Costa Rica (1.64% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Costa Rica in the 4th quarter of 2017 over the 4th quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - an increase of $1,795,947;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - an increase of $345,361;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $137,856;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - an increase of $88,257;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - an increase of $83,982.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Costa Rica in the 4th quarter of 2017 over the 4th quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $6,188,728;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $499,677;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - a decrease of $186,949;
  • Beverages, spirits and vinegar (HS code 22) - a decrease of $80,909;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $30,372;
  • Tanning or dyeing extracts; dyes, pigments, paints, varnishes, putty and mastics (HS code 32) - a decrease of $28,400;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - a decrease of $22,032.

Russia’s Imports from Costa Rica

The major share of Russian imports from Costa Rica in the 4th quarter of 2017 (and in the 4th quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 67.74% of Russia’s total imports from Costa Rica (82.87% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 30.87% of Russia’s total imports from Costa Rica (15.57% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Costa Rica in the 4th quarter of 2017 over the 4th quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Edible fruit and nuts; peel of citrus fruit or melons (HS code 08) - an increase of $10,320,759;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $8,066,049;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - an increase of $1,481,133.

The largest declines in Russia’s imports from Costa Rica in the 4th quarter of 2017 over the 4th quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Dairy produce; birds eggs; natural honey; edible products of animal origin, not elsewhere specified or included (HS code 04) - a decrease of $4,642,227;
  • Live trees and other plants; bulbs, roots and the like; cut flowers and ornamental foliage (HS code 06) - a decrease of $161,557.
