Russia’s Trade with Ethiopia

In the 4th quarter of 2017, Russia’s trade with Ethiopia was $36,990,322, down 78.75% ($137,116,178) from the 4th quarter of 2016.

Russia’s exports to Ethiopia in the 4th quarter of 2017 were $28,158,902, down 83.18% ($139,231,085) from the 4th quarter of 2016.

Russia’s imports from Ethiopia in the 4th quarter of 2017 totaled $8,831,420, up 31.49% ($2,114,907) from the 4th quarter of 2016.

Russia’s trade surplus with Ethiopia in the 4th quarter of 2017 was $19,327,482, a 87.97% decrease ($141,345,992) over the 4th quarter of 2016.

Ethiopia was Russia’s 107th largest trading partner in the 4th quarter of 2017 (down from 70th in the 4th quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0221% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.1278% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

Ethiopia was Russia’s 96th largest export market in the 4th quarter of 2017 (down from 62nd in the 4th quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0274% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.1997% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

Ethiopia was Russia’s 98th largest supplier in the 4th quarter of 2017 (up from 99th in the 4th quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0137% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.0128% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

Russia’s Exports to Ethiopia

The major share of Russian exports to Ethiopia in the 4th quarter of 2017 (and in the 4th quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 70.53% of Russia’s total exports to Ethiopia (2.84% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 27.67% of Russia’s total exports to Ethiopia (0.05% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 0.62% of Russia’s total exports to Ethiopia (5.72% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Ethiopia in the 4th quarter of 2017 over the 4th quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - an increase of $13,246,816;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $7,320,920;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $2,013,428;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $1,935,308;
  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - an increase of $343,980.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Ethiopia in the 4th quarter of 2017 over the 4th quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - a decrease of $9,506,000;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - a decrease of $2,086,547.

Russia’s Imports from Ethiopia

The major share of Russian imports from Ethiopia in the 4th quarter of 2017 (and in the 4th quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 97.35% of Russia’s total imports from Ethiopia (97.89% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 2.65% of Russia’s total imports from Ethiopia (1.68% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Ethiopia in the 4th quarter of 2017 over the 4th quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Coffee, tea, maté and spices (HS code 09) - an increase of $1,825,978;
  • Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers (HS code 07) - an increase of $675,318;
  • Articles of apparel and clothing accessories, not knitted or crocheted (HS code 62) - an increase of $124,781;
  • Articles of apparel and clothing accessories, knitted or crocheted (HS code 61) - an increase of $31,091.

The largest declines in Russia’s imports from Ethiopia in the 4th quarter of 2017 over the 4th quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Live trees and other plants; bulbs, roots and the like; cut flowers and ornamental foliage (HS code 06) - a decrease of $487,638;
  • Other vegetable textile fibers; paper yarn and woven fabric of paper yarn (HS code 53) - a decrease of $33,201;
  • Raw hides and skins (other than furskins) and leather (HS code 41) - a decrease of $27,519.
