Russia’s Trade with Afghanistan

In 2017, Russia’s trade with Afghanistan totaled $208,171,508, up 9.31% ($17,732,289) from 2016.

Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in 2017 totaled $205,267,463, up 11.46% ($21,106,956) from 2016.

Russia’s imports from Afghanistan in 2017 were $2,904,045, down 53.75% ($3,374,667) from 2016.

Russia’s trade surplus with Afghanistan in 2017 was $202,363,418, a 13.76% increase ($24,481,623) over 2016.

Afghanistan was Russia’s 99th largest trading partner in 2017 (up from 100th in 2016), accounting for 0.0356% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.0407% in 2016).

Afghanistan was Russia’s 85th largest export market in 2017 (just as in 2016), accounting for 0.0575% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.0645% in 2016).

Afghanistan was Russia’s 136th largest supplier in 2017 (down from 124th in 2016), accounting for 0.0013% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.0034% in 2016).

Russia’s Exports to Afghanistan

The major share of Russian exports to Afghanistan in 2017 (and in 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 49.26% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (48.41% in 2016);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 18.55% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (16.33% in 2016);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 16.95% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (21.83% in 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 9.39% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (9.51% in 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 2.81% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (2.23% in 2016);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 2.25% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (1.18% in 2016).

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $11,964,247;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $7,412,851;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $1,877,466;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $1,220,038;
  • Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers (HS code 07) - an increase of $1,000,697;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $970,096;
  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - an increase of $810,019;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - an increase of $650,042.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in 2017 over 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - a decrease of $4,888,739;
  • Sugars and sugar confectionery (HS code 17) - a decrease of $1,552,893.

Russia’s Imports from Afghanistan

The major share of Russian imports from Afghanistan in 2017 (and in 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 67.33% of Russia’s total imports from Afghanistan (99.37% in 2016);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 12.75% of Russia’s total imports from Afghanistan (0.03% in 2016).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Afghanistan in 2017 over 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $207,450;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $99,811;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - an increase of $57,803.

The largest declines in Russia’s imports from Afghanistan in 2017 over 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Edible fruit and nuts; peel of citrus fruit or melons (HS code 08) - a decrease of $4,217,366;
  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - a decrease of $66,571;
  • Carpets and other textile floor coverings (HS code 57) - a decrease of $32,545.
