Russia’s Trade with Syria

In 2017, Russia’s trade with Syria totaled $282,771,945, up 46.31% ($89,496,979) from 2016.

Russia’s exports to Syria in 2017 totaled $279,858,722, up 53.55% ($97,604,383) from 2016.

Russia’s imports from Syria in 2017 were $2,913,223, down 73.57% ($8,107,404) from 2016.

Russia’s trade surplus with Syria in 2017 was $276,945,499, a 61.74% increase ($105,711,787) over 2016.

Syria was Russia’s 92nd largest trading partner in 2017 (up from 99th in 2016), accounting for 0.0484% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0413% in 2016).

Syria was Russia’s 76th largest export market in 2017 (up from 87th in 2016), accounting for 0.0784% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0638% in 2016).

Syria was Russia’s 135th largest supplier in 2017 (down from 113th in 2016), accounting for 0.0013% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.0060% in 2016).

Russia’s Exports to Syria

The major share of Russian exports to Syria in 2017 (and in 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 34.76% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (25.76% in 2016);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 15.59% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (7.08% in 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 10.46% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (4.13% in 2016);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 5.01% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (6.68% in 2016).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Syria in 2017 over 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $35,830,341;
  • Explosives; pyrotechnic products; matches; pyrophoric alloys; certain combustible preparations (HS code 36) - an increase of $21,469,206;
  • Printed books, newspapers, pictures and other products of the printing industry; manuscripts, typescripts and plans (HS code 49) - an increase of $20,965,289;
  • Tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes (HS code 24) - an increase of $10,221,499;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $8,709,214;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - an increase of $5,518,505;
  • Sugars and sugar confectionery (HS code 17) - an increase of $2,782,026;
  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - an increase of $2,764,718;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - an increase of $1,051,852.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Syria in 2017 over 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - a decrease of $1,941,531;
  • Products of the milling industry; malt; starches; inulin; wheat gluten (HS code 11) - a decrease of $1,417,011;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $1,166,811.

Russia’s Imports from Syria

The major share of Russian imports from Syria in 2017 (and in 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 95.43% of Russia’s total imports from Syria (97.93% in 2016);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 2.51% of Russia’s total imports from Syria (0.54% in 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 1.00% of Russia’s total imports from Syria (0.42% in 2016).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Syria in 2017 over 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Coffee, tea, maté and spices (HS code 09) - an increase of $73,372;
  • Preparations of vegetables, fruit, nuts or other parts of plants (HS code 20) - an increase of $52,942;
  • Preparations of cereals, flour, starch or milk; bakers’ wares (HS code 19) - an increase of $50,473;
  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - an increase of $41,122;
  • Cocoa and cocoa preparations (HS code 18) - an increase of $18,227;
