Russia’s Trade with Australia

In the 1st quarter of 2018, Russia’s trade with Australia totaled $192,914,964, up 54.88% ($68,357,363) from the 1st quarter of 2017.

Russia’s exports to Australia in the 1st quarter of 2018 totaled $26,730,080, up 39.69% ($7,595,186) from the 1st quarter of 2017.

Russia’s imports from Australia in the 1st quarter of 2018 totaled $166,184,884, up 57.64% ($60,762,177) from the 1st quarter of 2017.

Russia’s trade deficit with Australia in the 1st quarter of 2018 was $139,454,804, a 61.62% increase ($53,166,991) over the 1st quarter of 2017.

Australia was Russia’s 70th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2018 (up from 75th in the 1st quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.1224% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0969% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

Australia was Russia’s 96th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2018 (up from 99th in the 1st quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0259% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0230% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

Australia was Russia’s 47th largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2018 (up from 51st in the 1st quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.3043% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.2332% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

Russia’s Exports to Australia

The major share of Russian exports to Australia in the 1st quarter of 2018 (and in the 1st quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 37.92% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (14.98% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 37.54% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (41.66% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 8.21% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (8.70% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 6.70% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (24.70% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 4.87% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (6.96% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 2.06% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (1.80% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Australia in the 1st quarter of 2018 over the 1st quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - an increase of $6,802,440;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $1,114,371;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - an increase of $942,009;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - an increase of $811,162;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $403,760;
  • Beverages, spirits and vinegar (HS code 22) - an increase of $208,664;
  • Furniture; bedding, mattresses, mattress supports, cushions and similar stuffed furnishings; lamps and lighting fittings, not elsewhere specified or included; illuminated sign illuminated nameplates and the like; prefabricated buildings (HS code 94) - an increase of $192,054;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - an increase of $180,911;
  • Glass and glassware (HS code 70) - an increase of $169,796.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Australia in the 1st quarter of 2018 over the 1st quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $2,936,898;
  • Tanning or dyeing extracts; dyes, pigments, paints, varnishes, putty and mastics (HS code 32) - a decrease of $158,354;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $143,524;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - a decrease of $115,727;
  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - a decrease of $81,367.

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 64.97% of Russia’s total imports from Australia (81.63% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 19.34% of Russia’s total imports from Australia (4.26% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 12.52% of Russia’s total imports from Australia (10.68% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 1.11% of Russia’s total imports from Australia (0.94% in the 1st quarter of 2017);

  • Albuminoidal substances; modified starches; glues; enzymes (HS code 35) - an increase of $1,008,078;
  • Beverages, spirits and vinegar (HS code 22) - an increase of $749,675;
