Russia’s Trade with Ethiopia

In the 1st quarter of 2018, Russia’s trade with Ethiopia was $27,368,801, down 1.33% ($370,236) from the 1st quarter of 2017.

Russia’s exports to Ethiopia in the 1st quarter of 2018 were $20,403,376, down 11.03% ($2,529,851) from the 1st quarter of 2017.

Russia’s imports from Ethiopia in the 1st quarter of 2018 totaled $6,965,425, up 44.94% ($2,159,615) from the 1st quarter of 2017.

Russia’s trade surplus with Ethiopia in the 1st quarter of 2018 was $13,437,951, a 25.87% decrease ($4,689,466) over the 1st quarter of 2017.

Ethiopia was Russia’s 115th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2018 (down from 109th in the 1st quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0174% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.0216% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

Ethiopia was Russia’s 104th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2018 (down from 95th in the 1st quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0198% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.0275% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

Ethiopia was Russia’s 99th largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2018 (up from 103rd in the 1st quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0128% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.0106% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

Russia’s Exports to Ethiopia

The major share of Russian exports to Ethiopia in the 1st quarter of 2018 (and in the 1st quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 66.38% of Russia’s total exports to Ethiopia (1.08% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 31.50% of Russia’s total exports to Ethiopia (97.49% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 2.07% of Russia’s total exports to Ethiopia (1.28% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Ethiopia in the 1st quarter of 2018 over the 1st quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $13,414,568;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $4,664,044;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $129,319.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Ethiopia in the 1st quarter of 2018 over the 1st quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $20,652,921;
  • Beverages, spirits and vinegar (HS code 22) - a decrease of $117,789.

Russia’s Imports from Ethiopia

The major share of Russian imports from Ethiopia in the 1st quarter of 2018 (and in the 1st quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 95.06% of Russia’s total imports from Ethiopia (97.84% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 4.94% of Russia’s total imports from Ethiopia (2.16% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Ethiopia in the 1st quarter of 2018 over the 1st quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers (HS code 07) - an increase of $1,053,232;
  • Coffee, tea, maté and spices (HS code 09) - an increase of $960,447;
  • Articles of apparel and clothing accessories, not knitted or crocheted (HS code 62) - an increase of $135,306;
  • Footwear, gaiters and the like; parts of such articles (HS code 64) - an increase of $70,793;
  • Articles of apparel and clothing accessories, knitted or crocheted (HS code 61) - an increase of $38,445.
