Russia’s Trade with France

In the 1st quarter of 2018, Russia’s trade with France totaled $4,183,315,997, up 26.70% ($881,473,227) from the 1st quarter of 2017.

Russia’s exports to France in the 1st quarter of 2018 were $1,655,259,876, down 0.95% ($15,803,341) from the 1st quarter of 2017.

Russia’s imports from France in the 1st quarter of 2018 totaled $2,528,056,121, up 55.02% ($897,276,568) from the 1st quarter of 2017.

Russia’s trade balance with France went from a surplus of $40,283,664 in the 1st quarter of 2017, to a deficit of $872,796,245 in the 1st quarter of 2018.

France was Russia’s 12th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2018 (just as in the 1st quarter of 2017), accounting for 2.6538% of Russia’s total trade (up from 2.5685% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

France was Russia’s 16th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2018 (down from 15th in the 1st quarter of 2017), accounting for 1.6067% of Russia’s total exports (down from 2.0052% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

France was Russia’s 5th largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2018 (up from 7th in the 1st quarter of 2017), accounting for 4.6293% of Russia’s total imports (up from 3.6066% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

Russia’s Exports to France

The major share of Russian exports to France in the 1st quarter of 2018 (and in the 1st quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 85.19% of Russia’s total exports to France (88.26% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 3.79% of Russia’s total exports to France (2.44% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 3.64% of Russia’s total exports to France (2.41% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 3.60% of Russia’s total exports to France (3.58% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 1.21% of Russia’s total exports to France (0.86% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to France in the 1st quarter of 2018 over the 1st quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $15,572,736;
  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - an increase of $12,573,768;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $9,475,416;
  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - an increase of $9,352,676;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $5,386,849.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to France in the 1st quarter of 2018 over the 1st quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $65,986,567;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - a decrease of $11,819,118.

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 23.77% of Russia’s total imports from France (29.03% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 10.01% of Russia’s total imports from France (12.53% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 3.23% of Russia’s total imports from France (3.36% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
