Russia’s Trade with Kenya

In the 1st quarter of 2018, Russia’s trade with Kenya was $53,609,903, down 31.82% ($25,025,807) from the 1st quarter of 2017.

Russia’s exports to Kenya in the 1st quarter of 2018 were $17,029,838, down 58.15% ($23,659,834) from the 1st quarter of 2017.

Russia’s imports from Kenya in the 1st quarter of 2018 were $36,580,065, down 3.60% ($1,365,973) from the 1st quarter of 2017.

Russia’s trade balance with Kenya went from a surplus of $2,743,634 in the 1st quarter of 2017, to a deficit of $19,550,227 in the 1st quarter of 2018.

Kenya was Russia’s 94th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2018 (down from 87th in the 1st quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0340% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.0612% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

Kenya was Russia’s 108th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2018 (down from 85th in the 1st quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0165% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.0488% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

Kenya was Russia’s 79th largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2018 (down from 71st in the 1st quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0670% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.0839% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

Russia’s Exports to Kenya

The major share of Russian exports to Kenya in the 1st quarter of 2018 (and in the 1st quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 27.22% of Russia’s total exports to Kenya (5.07% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 25.64% of Russia’s total exports to Kenya (15.05% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 23.18% of Russia’s total exports to Kenya (29.79% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 16.67% of Russia’s total exports to Kenya (3.30% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 5.50% of Russia’s total exports to Kenya (0.43% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 1.66% of Russia’s total exports to Kenya (0.04% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Kenya in the 1st quarter of 2018 over the 1st quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - an increase of $2,388,390;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - an increase of $2,128,757;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - an increase of $2,013,393;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $812,650;
  • Beverages, spirits and vinegar (HS code 22) - an increase of $392,245;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $332,247;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $262,300;
  • Pulp of wood or of other fibrous cellulosic material; waste and scrap of paper or paperboard (HS code 47) - an increase of $228,244;
  • Miscellaneous chemical products (HS code 38) - an increase of $63,536.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Kenya in the 1st quarter of 2018 over the 1st quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $10,299,055;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - a decrease of $2,164,375;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - a decrease of $706,139;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - a decrease of $222,275.

Russia’s Imports from Kenya

The major share of Russian imports from Kenya in the 1st quarter of 2018 (and in the 1st quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 99.70% of Russia’s total imports from Kenya (99.69% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Kenya in the 1st quarter of 2018 over the 1st quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Edible fruit and nuts; peel of citrus fruit or melons (HS code 08) - an increase of $2,169,804;
  • Preparations of vegetables, fruit, nuts or other parts of plants (HS code 20) - an increase of $205,513;
  • Coffee, tea, maté and spices (HS code 09) - an increase of $172,317.

The largest declines in Russia’s imports from Kenya in the 1st quarter of 2018 over the 1st quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Live trees and other plants; bulbs, roots and the like; cut flowers and ornamental foliage (HS code 06) - a decrease of $2,803,322;
  • Tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes (HS code 24) - a decrease of $1,103,023.
