Russia’s Trade with Nigeria

In the 1st quarter of 2018, Russia’s trade with Nigeria was $72,398,743, down 14.98% ($12,757,250) from the 1st quarter of 2017.

Russia’s exports to Nigeria in the 1st quarter of 2018 totaled $67,876,728, up 5.37% ($3,459,205) from the 1st quarter of 2017.

Russia’s imports from Nigeria in the 1st quarter of 2018 were $4,522,015, down 78.20% ($16,216,455) from the 1st quarter of 2017.

Russia’s trade surplus with Nigeria in the 1st quarter of 2018 was $63,354,713, a 45.05% increase ($19,675,660) over the 1st quarter of 2017.

Nigeria was Russia’s 89th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2018 (down from 85th in the 1st quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0459% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.0662% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

Nigeria was Russia’s 77th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2018 (down from 76th in the 1st quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0659% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.0773% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

Nigeria was Russia’s 110th largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2018 (down from 83rd in the 1st quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0083% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.0459% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

Russia’s Exports to Nigeria

The major share of Russian exports to Nigeria in the 1st quarter of 2018 (and in the 1st quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 51.15% of Russia’s total exports to Nigeria (67.11% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 35.71% of Russia’s total exports to Nigeria (12.25% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 9.27% of Russia’s total exports to Nigeria (15.83% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 2.73% of Russia’s total exports to Nigeria (1.80% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 1.11% of Russia’s total exports to Nigeria (0.21% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 0.01% of Russia’s total exports to Nigeria (2.80% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Nigeria in the 1st quarter of 2018 over the 1st quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $16,403,498;
  • Fish and crustaceans, molluscs and other aquatic invertebrates (HS code 03) - an increase of $3,265,404;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - an increase of $2,984,733;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $552,738;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - an increase of $513,385.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Nigeria in the 1st quarter of 2018 over the 1st quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Cereals (HS code 10) - a decrease of $11,800,841;
  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - a decrease of $7,001,043;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $1,798,435.

Russia’s Imports from Nigeria

The major share of Russian imports from Nigeria in the 1st quarter of 2018 (and in the 1st quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 94.14% of Russia’s total imports from Nigeria (98.51% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 5.69% of Russia’s total imports from Nigeria (1.34% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Nigeria in the 1st quarter of 2018 over the 1st quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • No product groups with a substantial increase.

The largest declines in Russia’s imports from Nigeria in the 1st quarter of 2018 over the 1st quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - a decrease of $11,821,263;
  • Cocoa and cocoa preparations (HS code 18) - a decrease of $4,296,168;
  • Coffee, tea, maté and spices (HS code 09) - a decrease of $60,927;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $29,502;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - a decrease of $24,102.
