Russia’s Trade with Vietnam

In the 1st quarter of 2018, Russia’s trade with Vietnam totaled $1,137,657,733, up 15.50% ($152,667,367) from the 1st quarter of 2017.

Russia’s exports to Vietnam in the 1st quarter of 2018 totaled $325,102,384, up 4.84% ($15,011,795) from the 1st quarter of 2017.

Russia’s imports from Vietnam in the 1st quarter of 2018 totaled $812,555,349, up 20.40% ($137,655,572) from the 1st quarter of 2017.

Russia’s trade deficit with Vietnam in the 1st quarter of 2018 was $487,452,965, a 33.62% increase ($122,643,777) over the 1st quarter of 2017.

Vietnam was Russia’s 32nd largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2018 (down from 28th in the 1st quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.7217% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.7662% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

Vietnam was Russia’s 44th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2018 (down from 43rd in the 1st quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.3156% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.3721% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

Vietnam was Russia’s 16th largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2018 (down from 14th in the 1st quarter of 2017), accounting for 1.4879% of Russia’s total imports (down from 1.4926% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

Russia’s Exports to Vietnam

The major share of Russian exports to Vietnam in the 1st quarter of 2018 (and in the 1st quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 40.88% of Russia’s total exports to Vietnam (43.37% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 18.05% of Russia’s total exports to Vietnam (17.32% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 16.56% of Russia’s total exports to Vietnam (17.65% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 13.76% of Russia’s total exports to Vietnam (10.56% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 7.82% of Russia’s total exports to Vietnam (8.26% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 2.67% of Russia’s total exports to Vietnam (2.42% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Vietnam in the 1st quarter of 2018 over the 1st quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $7,620,963;
  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - an increase of $4,870,074;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $4,602,251;
  • Meat and edible meat offal (HS code 02) - an increase of $3,481,398;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - an increase of $3,271,626;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $3,189,889;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - an increase of $2,949,352;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - an increase of $2,159,334;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - an increase of $2,035,279;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - an increase of $1,910,521;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - an increase of $1,527,810;
  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - an increase of $1,015,950.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Vietnam in the 1st quarter of 2018 over the 1st quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - a decrease of $8,868,741;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - a decrease of $7,525,690;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $7,031,435;
  • Salt; sulfur; earths and stone; plastering materials, lime and cement (HS code 25) - a decrease of $2,536,236;
  • Products of the milling industry; malt; starches; inulin; wheat gluten (HS code 11) - a decrease of $1,377,542.

The major share of Russian imports from Vietnam in the 1st quarter of 2018 (and in the 1st quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 18.29% of Russia’s total imports from Vietnam (21.44% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 13.13% of Russia’s total imports from Vietnam (12.96% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 3.29% of Russia’s total imports from Vietnam (2.38% in the 1st quarter of 2017).
