Russia’s Trade with Japan

In the 2nd quarter of 2018, Russia’s trade with Japan totaled $5,598,300,152, up 23.43% ($1,062,820,856) from the 2nd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s exports to Japan in the 2nd quarter of 2018 totaled $3,322,575,110, up 24.99% ($664,329,353) from the 2nd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s imports from Japan in the 2nd quarter of 2018 totaled $2,275,725,042, up 21.23% ($398,491,503) from the 2nd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s trade surplus with Japan in the 2nd quarter of 2018 was $1,046,850,068, a 34.04% increase ($265,837,850) over the 2nd quarter of 2017.

Japan was Russia’s 9th largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2018 (just as in the 2nd quarter of 2017), accounting for 3.2755% of Russia’s total trade (up from 3.2453% in the 2nd quarter of 2017).

Japan was Russia’s 9th largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2018 (up from 10th in the 2nd quarter of 2017), accounting for 3.0149% of Russia’s total exports (down from 3.1656% in the 2nd quarter of 2017).

Japan was Russia’s 7th largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2018 (up from 8th in the 2nd quarter of 2017), accounting for 3.7486% of Russia’s total imports (up from 3.3651% in the 2nd quarter of 2017).

Russia’s Exports to Japan

The major share of Russian exports to Japan in the 2nd quarter of 2018 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 75.43% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (75.23% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 8.90% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (10.17% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 7.36% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (4.25% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 3.98% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (4.51% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 11.23% of Russia’s total imports from Japan (10.61% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 3.10% of Russia’s total imports from Japan (3.01% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
