Russia’s Trade with South Ossetia

In the 2nd quarter of 2018, Russia’s trade with South Ossetia totaled $18,900,342, up 50.28% ($6,323,834) from the 2nd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s exports to South Ossetia in the 2nd quarter of 2018 totaled $15,295,895, up 64.41% ($5,992,411) from the 2nd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s imports from South Ossetia in the 2nd quarter of 2018 totaled $3,604,447, up 10.13% ($331,423) from the 2nd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s trade surplus with South Ossetia in the 2nd quarter of 2018 was $11,691,448, a 93.87% increase ($5,660,988) over the 2nd quarter of 2017.

South Ossetia was Russia’s 122nd largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2018 (up from 126th in the 2nd quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0111% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0090% in the 2nd quarter of 2017).

South Ossetia was Russia’s 111th largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2018 (up from 116th in the 2nd quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0139% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0111% in the 2nd quarter of 2017).

South Ossetia was Russia’s 113th largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2018 (down from 110th in the 2nd quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0059% of Russia’s total imports (just as in the 2nd quarter of 2017).

Russia’s Exports to South Ossetia

The major share of Russian exports to South Ossetia in the 2nd quarter of 2018 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 30.06% of Russia’s total exports to South Ossetia (23.01% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 19.86% of Russia’s total exports to South Ossetia (8.74% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 16.40% of Russia’s total exports to South Ossetia (29.40% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 10.75% of Russia’s total exports to South Ossetia (8.00% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 8.96% of Russia’s total exports to South Ossetia (17.24% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 6.62% of Russia’s total exports to South Ossetia (7.84% in the 2nd quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to South Ossetia in the 2nd quarter of 2018 over the 2nd quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Furniture; bedding, mattresses, mattress supports, cushions and similar stuffed furnishings; lamps and lighting fittings, not elsewhere specified or included; illuminated sign illuminated nameplates and the like; prefabricated buildings (HS code 94) - an increase of $405,864;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - an increase of $379,627;
  • Musical instruments; parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 92) - an increase of $204,002;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $188,621;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $188,412;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - an increase of $177,270;
  • Miscellaneous chemical products (HS code 38) - an increase of $149,068;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - an increase of $124,792;

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to South Ossetia in the 2nd quarter of 2018 over the 2nd quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $292,494;
  • Products of the milling industry; malt; starches; inulin; wheat gluten (HS code 11) - a decrease of $223,925;
  • Cotton (HS code 52) - a decrease of $187,683;
  • Articles of stone, plaster, cement, asbestos, mica or similar materials (HS code 68) - a decrease of $109,562;
  • Natural or cultured pearls, precious or semi-precious stones,precious metals, metals clad with precious metal and articles thereof; imitation jewelry; coin (HS code 71) - a decrease of $56,278;
  • Cocoa and cocoa preparations (HS code 18) - a decrease of $53,645;
  • Special woven fabrics; tufted textile fabrics; lace, tapestries; trimmings; embroidery (HS code 58) - a decrease of $49,138.
