Russia’s Trade with Syria

In the 2nd quarter of 2018, Russia’s trade with Syria totaled $176,895,738, up 53.25% ($61,462,491) from the 2nd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s exports to Syria in the 2nd quarter of 2018 totaled $175,705,025, up 52.75% ($60,676,289) from the 2nd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s imports from Syria in the 2nd quarter of 2018 totaled $1,190,713, up 194.36% ($786,202) from the 2nd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s trade surplus with Syria in the 2nd quarter of 2018 was $174,514,312, a 52.25% increase ($59,890,087) over the 2nd quarter of 2017.

Syria was Russia’s 76th largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2018 (up from 79th in the 2nd quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.1035% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0826% in the 2nd quarter of 2017).

Syria was Russia’s 66th largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2018 (up from 68th in the 2nd quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.1594% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.1370% in the 2nd quarter of 2017).

Syria was Russia’s 128th largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2018 (up from 140th in the 2nd quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0020% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.0007% in the 2nd quarter of 2017).

Russia’s Exports to Syria

The major share of Russian exports to Syria in the 2nd quarter of 2018 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 9.52% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (4.27% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 8.29% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (25.98% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 7.82% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (3.91% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 7.75% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (17.82% in the 2nd quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Syria in the 2nd quarter of 2018 over the 2nd quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Printed books, newspapers, pictures and other products of the printing industry; manuscripts, typescripts and plans (HS code 49) - an increase of $12,162,544;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $10,023,201;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $1,725,442;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $1,482,179;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - an increase of $638,656.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Syria in the 2nd quarter of 2018 over the 2nd quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes (HS code 24) - a decrease of $9,430,533;
  • Explosives; pyrotechnic products; matches; pyrophoric alloys; certain combustible preparations (HS code 36) - a decrease of $7,447,664;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - a decrease of $3,863,882;
  • Sugars and sugar confectionery (HS code 17) - a decrease of $2,782,026;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $1,825,052;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - a decrease of $676,514.

Russia’s Imports from Syria

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 10.77% of Russia’s total imports from Syria (1.59% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 1.49% of Russia’s total imports from Syria (0.04% in the 2nd quarter of 2017).
