Russia’s Trade with Ukraine

In the 2nd quarter of 2018, Russia’s trade with Ukraine totaled $3,724,944,080, up 19.19% ($599,730,653) from the 2nd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s exports to Ukraine in the 2nd quarter of 2018 totaled $2,311,127,352, up 19.01% ($369,172,249) from the 2nd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s imports from Ukraine in the 2nd quarter of 2018 totaled $1,413,816,728, up 19.49% ($230,558,404) from the 2nd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s trade surplus with Ukraine in the 2nd quarter of 2018 was $897,310,624, a 18.27% increase ($138,613,845) over the 2nd quarter of 2017.

Ukraine was Russia’s 14th largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2018 (down from 13th in the 2nd quarter of 2017), accounting for 2.1794% of Russia’s total trade (down from 2.2362% in the 2nd quarter of 2017).

Ukraine was Russia’s 16th largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2018 (down from 14th in the 2nd quarter of 2017), accounting for 2.0971% of Russia’s total exports (down from 2.3126% in the 2nd quarter of 2017).

Ukraine was Russia’s 10th largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2018 (up from 11th in the 2nd quarter of 2017), accounting for 2.3289% of Russia’s total imports (up from 2.1211% in the 2nd quarter of 2017).

Russia’s Exports to Ukraine

The major share of Russian exports to Ukraine in the 2nd quarter of 2018 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 49.56% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (33.78% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 16.46% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (29.13% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 10.92% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (13.61% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 8.25% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (7.42% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 7.88% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (8.79% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 3.39% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (3.47% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 1.16% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (1.42% in the 2nd quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Ukraine in the 2nd quarter of 2018 over the 2nd quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $415,263,158;
  • Ores, slag and ash (HS code 26) - an increase of $73,932,806;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $27,024,359;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $15,972,490;
  • Tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes (HS code 24) - an increase of $8,414,917;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - an increase of $8,201,731;
  • Miscellaneous chemical products (HS code 38) - an increase of $8,160,034.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Ukraine in the 2nd quarter of 2018 over the 2nd quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - a decrease of $102,150,101;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - a decrease of $89,087,271;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $20,383,862.
