Russia’s Trade with India

In the 3rd quarter of 2018, Russia’s trade with India was $2,407,651,121, down 1.19% ($28,977,502) from the 3rd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s exports to India in the 3rd quarter of 2018 were $1,601,239,956, down 7.07% ($121,870,888) from the 3rd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s imports from India in the 3rd quarter of 2018 totaled $806,411,165, up 13.02% ($92,893,386) from the 3rd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s trade surplus with India in the 3rd quarter of 2018 was $794,828,791, a 21.27% decrease ($214,764,274) over the 3rd quarter of 2017.

India was Russia’s 17th largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (down from 16th in the 3rd quarter of 2017), accounting for 1.3992% of Russia’s total trade (down from 1.6668% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).

India was Russia’s 18th largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (down from 15th in the 3rd quarter of 2017), accounting for 1.4272% of Russia’s total exports (down from 2.0186% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).

India was Russia’s 19th largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (up from 21st in the 3rd quarter of 2017), accounting for 1.3468% of Russia’s total imports (up from 1.1730% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).

Russia’s Exports to India

The major share of Russian exports to India in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 27.46% of Russia’s total exports to India (33.29% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 24.85% of Russia’s total exports to India (21.80% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 14.72% of Russia’s total exports to India (15.41% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 10.43% of Russia’s total exports to India (7.01% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 6.53% of Russia’s total exports to India (4.67% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 5.70% of Russia’s total exports to India (5.04% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 0.24% of Russia’s total exports to India (1.71% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to India in the 3rd quarter of 2018 over the 3rd quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $60,239,769;
  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - an increase of $22,340,156;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - an increase of $17,975,838;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - an increase of $15,601,093;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $13,901,001;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - an increase of $10,645,879;

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to India in the 3rd quarter of 2018 over the 3rd quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $137,315,068;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - a decrease of $42,844,193;
  • Natural or cultured pearls, precious or semi-precious stones,precious metals, metals clad with precious metal and articles thereof; imitation jewelry; coin (HS code 71) - a decrease of $29,746,681;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $17,964,072;
  • Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers (HS code 07) - a decrease of $13,975,325;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - a decrease of $10,630,950;

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 28.85% of Russia’s total imports from India (20.55% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 18.38% of Russia’s total imports from India (21.22% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 10.65% of Russia’s total imports from India (13.98% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 6.37% of Russia’s total imports from India (5.92% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).
