Russia’s Trade with Iran

In the 3rd quarter of 2018, Russia’s trade with Iran was $315,028,207, down 26.70% ($114,722,896) from the 3rd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s exports to Iran in the 3rd quarter of 2018 were $247,242,829, down 36.47% ($141,903,582) from the 3rd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s imports from Iran in the 3rd quarter of 2018 totaled $67,785,378, up 66.94% ($27,180,686) from the 3rd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s trade surplus with Iran in the 3rd quarter of 2018 was $179,457,451, a 48.51% decrease ($169,084,268) over the 3rd quarter of 2017.

Iran was Russia’s 60th largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (down from 49th in the 3rd quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.1831% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.2940% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).

Iran was Russia’s 51st largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (down from 40th in the 3rd quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.2204% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.4559% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).

Iran was Russia’s 63rd largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (up from 73rd in the 3rd quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.1132% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.0668% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).

Russia’s Exports to Iran

The major share of Russian exports to Iran in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 73.12% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (41.57% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 16.41% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (9.14% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 3.35% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (17.69% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 2.35% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (2.24% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 0.83% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (27.05% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 0.36% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (1.90% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Iran in the 3rd quarter of 2018 over the 3rd quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Meat and edible meat offal (HS code 02) - an increase of $16,996,040;
  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - an increase of $4,828,864;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - an increase of $3,743,587;
  • Railway or tramway locomotives, rolling-stock and parts thereof; railway or tramway track fixtures and fittings and parts thereof; mechanical (including electro-mechanical) traffic signalling equipment of all kinds (HS code 86) - an increase of $1,409,327;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $1,294,510;
  • Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers (HS code 07) - an increase of $1,268,048;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $1,224,993;
  • Printed books, newspapers, pictures and other products of the printing industry; manuscripts, typescripts and plans (HS code 49) - an increase of $984,072;
  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - an increase of $793,340.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Iran in the 3rd quarter of 2018 over the 3rd quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $102,188,064;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - a decrease of $34,206,777;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $27,227,913;
  • Ores, slag and ash (HS code 26) - a decrease of $4,696,543;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - a decrease of $2,763,819;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - a decrease of $2,407,365;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $1,799,799;
  • Ships, boats and floating structures (HS code 89) - a decrease of $1,511,901;
  • Residues and waste from the food industries; prepared animal feed (HS code 23) - a decrease of $1,441,428;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - a decrease of $1,175,153;
  • Pulp of wood or of other fibrous cellulosic material; waste and scrap of paper or paperboard (HS code 47) - a decrease of $922,478;
