Russia’s Trade with South Ossetia

In the 3rd quarter of 2018, Russia’s trade with South Ossetia was $15,439,386, down 15.00% ($2,724,018) from the 3rd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s exports to South Ossetia in the 3rd quarter of 2018 were $12,378,874, down 16.48% ($2,443,350) from the 3rd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s imports from South Ossetia in the 3rd quarter of 2018 were $3,060,512, down 8.40% ($280,668) from the 3rd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s trade surplus with South Ossetia in the 3rd quarter of 2018 was $9,318,362, a 18.84% decrease ($2,162,682) over the 3rd quarter of 2017.

South Ossetia was Russia’s 130th largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (down from 122nd in the 3rd quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0090% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.0124% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).

South Ossetia was Russia’s 118th largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (down from 108th in the 3rd quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0110% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.0174% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).

South Ossetia was Russia’s 112th largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (up from 113th in the 3rd quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0051% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.0055% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).

Russia’s Exports to South Ossetia

The major share of Russian exports to South Ossetia in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 30.09% of Russia’s total exports to South Ossetia (15.24% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 18.81% of Russia’s total exports to South Ossetia (13.71% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 13.24% of Russia’s total exports to South Ossetia (7.08% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 13.16% of Russia’s total exports to South Ossetia (35.59% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 8.53% of Russia’s total exports to South Ossetia (12.48% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 7.83% of Russia’s total exports to South Ossetia (8.69% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);

  • Printed books, newspapers, pictures and other products of the printing industry; manuscripts, typescripts and plans (HS code 49) - an increase of $119,292;
  • Ceramic products (HS code 69) - an increase of $113,395;
  • Miscellaneous manufactured articles (HS code 96) - an increase of $54,501;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - an increase of $44,907.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to South Ossetia in the 3rd quarter of 2018 over the 3rd quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - a decrease of $1,687,765;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $1,379,248;
  • Cotton (HS code 52) - a decrease of $833,211;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - a decrease of $578,743;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - a decrease of $494,281;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - a decrease of $458,538;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - a decrease of $243,786;
  • Products of the milling industry; malt; starches; inulin; wheat gluten (HS code 11) - a decrease of $213,235;
