Russia’s Trade with Syria

In the 3rd quarter of 2018, Russia’s trade with Syria totaled $76,533,651, up 32.85% ($18,922,676) from the 3rd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s exports to Syria in the 3rd quarter of 2018 totaled $76,335,424, up 34.38% ($19,528,219) from the 3rd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s imports from Syria in the 3rd quarter of 2018 were $198,227, down 75.34% ($605,543) from the 3rd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s trade surplus with Syria in the 3rd quarter of 2018 was $76,137,197, a 35.95% increase ($20,133,762) over the 3rd quarter of 2017.

Syria was Russia’s 90th largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (up from 95th in the 3rd quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0445% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0394% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).

Syria was Russia’s 82nd largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (up from 83rd in the 3rd quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0680% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0666% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).

Syria was Russia’s 142nd largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (down from 132nd in the 3rd quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0003% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.0013% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).

Russia’s Exports to Syria

The major share of Russian exports to Syria in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 27.95% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (14.42% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 20.53% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (40.14% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 4.02% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (0.98% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 1.20% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (3.71% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 1.15% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (10.59% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Syria in the 3rd quarter of 2018 over the 3rd quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Printed books, newspapers, pictures and other products of the printing industry; manuscripts, typescripts and plans (HS code 49) - an increase of $13,170,653;
  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - an increase of $3,164,148;
  • Copper and articles thereof (HS code 74) - an increase of $1,972,234;
  • Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers (HS code 07) - an increase of $448,248;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $387,131;
  • Tanning or dyeing extracts; dyes, pigments, paints, varnishes, putty and mastics (HS code 32) - an increase of $311,541.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Syria in the 3rd quarter of 2018 over the 3rd quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes (HS code 24) - a decrease of $6,861,075;
  • Explosives; pyrotechnic products; matches; pyrophoric alloys; certain combustible preparations (HS code 36) - a decrease of $5,222,625;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - a decrease of $3,736,343;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $862,095;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $532,852.

Russia’s Imports from Syria

The major share of Russian imports from Syria in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 91.64% of Russia’s total imports from Syria (94.86% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 7.91% of Russia’s total imports from Syria (0.33% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 0.00% of Russia’s total imports from Syria (4.59% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Syria in the 3rd quarter of 2018 over the 3rd quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Special woven fabrics; tufted textile fabrics; lace, tapestries; trimmings; embroidery (HS code 58) - an increase of $15,365;
  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - an increase of $6,325;
  • Coffee, tea, maté and spices (HS code 09) - an increase of $2,699;
  • Miscellaneous edible preparations (HS code 21) - an increase of $2,413;
  • Articles of leather; saddlery and harness; travel goods, handbags and similar containers; articles of animal gut (other than silkworm gut) (HS code 42) - an increase of $862.

The largest declines in Russia’s imports from Syria in the 3rd quarter of 2018 over the 3rd quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Edible fruit and nuts; peel of citrus fruit or melons (HS code 08) - a decrease of $520,764;
  • Preparations of cereals, flour, starch or milk; bakers’ wares (HS code 19) - a decrease of $42,515;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - a decrease of $34,189;
  • Cocoa and cocoa preparations (HS code 18) - a decrease of $15,126;
  • Beverages, spirits and vinegar (HS code 22) - a decrease of $6,941;
  • Sugars and sugar confectionery (HS code 17) - a decrease of $3,744;
  • Preparations of vegetables, fruit, nuts or other parts of plants (HS code 20) - a decrease of $3,185;
