Russia’s Trade with Vietnam

In the 3rd quarter of 2018, Russia’s trade with Vietnam totaled $1,609,993,816, up 13.55% ($192,174,464) from the 3rd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s exports to Vietnam in the 3rd quarter of 2018 totaled $550,620,384, up 2.72% ($14,570,793) from the 3rd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s imports from Vietnam in the 3rd quarter of 2018 totaled $1,059,373,432, up 20.14% ($177,603,671) from the 3rd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s trade deficit with Vietnam in the 3rd quarter of 2018 was $508,753,048, a 47.16% increase ($163,032,878) over the 3rd quarter of 2017.

Vietnam was Russia’s 22nd largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (just as in the 3rd quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.9357% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.9699% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).

Vietnam was Russia’s 39th largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (down from 33rd in the 3rd quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.4908% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.6280% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).

Vietnam was Russia’s 12th largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (up from 16th in the 3rd quarter of 2017), accounting for 1.7693% of Russia’s total imports (up from 1.4496% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).

Russia’s Exports to Vietnam

The major share of Russian exports to Vietnam in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 41.89% of Russia’s total exports to Vietnam (12.13% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 17.45% of Russia’s total exports to Vietnam (4.45% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 14.03% of Russia’s total exports to Vietnam (10.82% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 4.63% of Russia’s total exports to Vietnam (5.91% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 3.08% of Russia’s total exports to Vietnam (64.54% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 1.51% of Russia’s total exports to Vietnam (1.60% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Vietnam in the 3rd quarter of 2018 over the 3rd quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $159,463,613;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $73,840,720;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $15,985,012;
  • Meat and edible meat offal (HS code 02) - an increase of $7,997,581;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - an increase of $5,540,831;
  • Ores, slag and ash (HS code 26) - an increase of $3,210,029;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - an increase of $2,114,053;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - an increase of $1,966,585;
  • Products of animal origin, not elsewhere specified or included (HS code 05) - an increase of $1,718,765.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Vietnam in the 3rd quarter of 2018 over the 3rd quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Ships, boats and floating structures (HS code 89) - a decrease of $297,834,175;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $35,402,498;
  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - a decrease of $6,706,244;
  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - a decrease of $3,931,572;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - a decrease of $3,407,684;
  • Explosives; pyrotechnic products; matches; pyrophoric alloys; certain combustible preparations (HS code 36) - a decrease of $1,663,186.

  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 21.49% of Russia’s total imports from Vietnam (24.55% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 11.37% of Russia’s total imports from Vietnam (12.08% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 2.03% of Russia’s total imports from Vietnam (3.34% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).
